And sadly it's not just the government; the people of Russia, by a large margin, do not believe gay people should be accepted by society.

It would be comforting to think it's just a few bad apples--or even that it's just Putin--but it's just not true.

Some scary information from a NY Times article:

"In 1989, 31 percent of the Russian population said in polls that homosexuals ought to be executed, and 32 percent said they should be isolated. Only 12 percent said they ought to be left alone. While the figures are shifting, they still have along way to go: in 1994, 23 percent in a poll said homosexuals should be killed, 24 percent said they should be isolated, and 29 percent said they ought to be left alone."
