"In 1989, 31 percent of the Russian population said in polls that homosexuals ought to be executed, and 32 percent said they should be isolated. Only 12 percent said they ought to be left alone. While the figures are shifting, they still have along way to go: in 1994, 23 percent in a poll said homosexuals should be killed, 24 percent said they should be isolated, and 29 percent said they ought to be left alone.""
Reggie, i think youd agree that years behind the Iron Curtain has left the people scarred and behind the times. I would love to see what freedom loving liberty for all USA was like lets say just 5 years ago, or even during Mad Men era. i bet its the same

she was punched multiple times in the stomach before she and her husband were removed by bar security guards, who then allowed the fight to continue, she said.
This made my heart sink. When security that gets paid to serve the one purpose of protecting patrons and diffusing situations becomes conveniently selective about what fights to break... It seemed from the story that they removed the very people trying to help break it up to begin with.

My fear as a natural-born citizen of this country, is that the Hucakbees and other Foxers will turn supporting the Russian Olympics into another Chick-Fil-A, convincing their viewers they aren't really conservative if they don't.

Could it possibly be that the Russians are too foul for even Fox News?
A better bet would be for them to ignore this issue altogether, which is what I imagine they are doing.

its a well established fact that Russian/Slavic genes are considered the worlds beauty standard. Look at the models, both runway and popular and actresses.

Posted: 8/6/13 at 3:29pmNamo, I could see them really only talking about this if a boycott of the Olympics were to happen. Then they would make it into an issue about how we shouldn't get involved with other countries policies (unless they're in the Middle East).

Namo, I already see that happening to an extent. A gay playwright who I think very highly of and is on my facebook posted that boycotting the Olympics would make no sense because nobody boycotted Thatcher's 1980s British laws against "promoting" homosexuality to the young. Arguments like that are inane, IMHO, anyway--it's beyond stupid to not stick up for something now because people didn't stick up for it in the past. But regardless, the UK still did "allow" some gay propaganda at the time (films like My Beautiful Laundrette, novels like The Swimming Pool Library,) it was not quite the same.
Ever since I was a ballet obsessed kid my dream has been to go to St Petersburg and see the Mariinsky/Kirov ballet. When I was a teen I did a dance workshop with some of the members of that company when they were on a tour. My mind boggles at a country that can hold people like many of their ballet dancers (who are--or at least were--obviously gay even during the communist regime) as superstars and icons and yet allow all of these atrocities.

Beyond stupid is absolutely right, Eric.
ETA I decided to go back and bold that.

This whole thing really seems like how it could have been in Germany during the 30's.
It seems like Russia is one step from actually rounding them up.
Seriously scary ****.

Sue, what do you suggest, instead of just disagreeing with everyone?
(And I agree, it does reek of post Weimer Germany--the two countries are in similar states, which is when it's easy to encourage people to find a scapegoat.)

Posted: 8/6/13 at 3:56pmTax, it looks like that's the direction these backwoods Russians are going in and I really hope that our country takes the lead in condemning it ASAP.

I assume you all have read about this disgusting string of crimes carried out by a Russian neo-Nazi group, where they go on gay networking sites and lure young gay men into traps, torturing and humiliating them on camera? Kicker? The police do nothing. There are no words for this level of hatred and cruelty.
