Sue, what do you suggest, instead of just disagreeing with everyone?
Erik that is a good question and not an easy one. first, i just think its selfish of us to ask athletes to drop something they have been working very hard for most of their lives while we sit comfy in our living rooms and demand them to take up our cause. what i would do is ask our President and Gvt not to boycott the event but to make it known that we do not like this behavior. that probably (thankfully) lost Jimmy Peanut his reelection
I also do not think it is right to condemn a whole country or all of its people for a few dozen, hundred people. thats the definition of prejudice. lets face it, people would rightly be boiled alive if they did that too gay, black or just about anyone else.... well unless it was ALec Baldwin

Posted: 8/6/13 at 4:07pmKad, there were posts about those online-prey attacks in a previous thread. Interesting to see the map--I'm curious why Finland is lower--I had always assumed (wrongly, apparently) that it was fairly liberal like the Scandinavian countries.

Borsta i dont know who that is.
Im far from alone here in suggesting that big bully baldwin should be made to give pennance for his anti -gay language. we wouldnt allow say Kevin James or Kristen Stewart to say such hateful things.

OK, on this I agree. And I do think, as someone else pointed out, that it's unfair to bring up stats that are taken after a law has already passed--I don't believe it's accurate (and maybe this is just me being naïve) that it truly represents the citizens of the country as a whole. *That said* it does show apathy to the situation, or at the least a naivety as to how damning the laws are.
I do agree that the pressure really needs to be placed on our own leaders--I know the mayor of Vancouver has spoken out, but I have little hope of Harper (who tried to build his campaign at one time on revoking Canada's gay marriage laws) will get involved.

This is the last thread I thought would give me a chuckle.

Kad, i agree, its not comparable to the horror that happens to those people, but look at my post, i was comparing it to people saying idiotic things about innocent hardworking people who are 90% poor and downtrodden

And in several decades, students will ask their teachers how the people of Russia, like the people of Third Reich Germany, so willingly blinded themselves to the atrocities in their backyards.

Exactly, Namo. There's no excuse for ignorance.
But again, the polls would indicate that they know exactly what's going on in their backyards and they approve.

I don't think they do, frankly. Or at least not to the extent that it is (not that that gives them remotely a free pass.)

talk about elitism Jordo. that doesnt make them bad people, just like here, most poor people are the most giving and spirutal and loving of all. i would think you would be more understanding

Posted: 8/6/13 at 4:30pmEric, I would love to learn that all those poll numbers are wrong. Do you have some contradictory info?
#73Man Beaten in Moscow Bar for 'Looking Gay'
Posted: 8/6/13 at 4:33pmNo, I don't. At all--and I wish I did. I just like to think (and liking to think is useless in situations like this, I admit) that a lot of the people polled don't realize exactly what's going on. To bring it back to the Germany comparison, I think the same case would be true. Which obviously means nothing except that--as Namo said--apathy and naivety is a dangerous combination. My comment was not meant to change anything from how awful and dangerous I think the situation is--but I do believe many people in Russia simply don't realize that.
