Mommie Dearest, Valley of the Dolls and Good Camp

After months of attempting to get me to embrace more camp beyond Mommie Dearest, a close friend finally got me to watch the first half of Valley of the Dolls. I must say that I'm not as amused as I expected to be. There are funny parts but it's not laugh-a-second like Mommie Dearest. Any other suggestions as to what I would find funny given my obsession with Mommie Dearest? I've already seen Serial Mom multiple times and love it. I want another good movie about a bitch and the people who just bow down to her.

The Bad Seed!!
So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.~Office Space

re: Mommie Dearest, Valley of the Dolls and Good Camp

The movie is called "And Just RELAX!" ?

I guess Joan Crawford is the first person that comes to people's minds when they think of camp. At least Almodovar and Warhol would've said so...

re:

I hate MOMMIE DEAREST and love VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, so I guess I can't help. The best of the Joan Crawford ones is QUEEN BEE.

re:

I've seen Queen Bee. Joan was too nice from the beginning for me to get into it, but I enjoy Straight-Jacket just because she looks so great wielding an axe.

Why do you hate Mommie Dearest? Maybe I hate you then. Just kidding.

re:

Ah, COBRA WOMAN. The very definition of camp. All of Maria Montez's vehicles with Jon Hall, Turhan Bey and Sabu, including Ali Baba and the Fort Thieves, Gypsy Wildcat, and Arabian Nights are simply laugh out loud funny. I used to have friends over to watch them and I would have to pause and rewind continually because we were in hysterics so often and didn't want to miss any of the dialogue. Not to mention, it takes multiple listens to figure out just what the hell Maria is saying half the time -- what an accent!

"Jou ferget, I am de high prrrriestess! I haff spokan!"

Maybe Rita Moreno (in full Googie Gomez mode) can revive this on stage someday.

re:

Try William Castle's HOMICIDAL, starring the legendary Jean Arless, or ORGASMO a.k.a PARANOIA, starring Carroll Baker after she had fled Hollywood for Europe.

re:

I love "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte"! Although the best bitchy, catty fighting went on behind the scenes for that one. It also features Victor Buono in a small role. Hard to believe he ended up as King Tut on Batman.

re:

"Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" sounds an awful lot like "Straight-Jacket."

re:

Hush, Hush... Sweet Charlotte and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane are certainly nutty movies.

re:

Charlotte and Strait-Jacket are nothing alike.

Yes Evelyn I love me some Momme Dearest!

re:

I would suggest "Queen of Outer Space," starring Zsa Zsa Gabor.

I'm sure Master would agree.

'Quise--have you seen it?

re:

Joey, QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE indeed belongs in the patheon of so-awful-it's-fabulous films!

Here's another great one that NEEDS to be on DVD (Or better yet, re-issued on the big screen): LOVE HAS MANY FACES, with Lans Turner, Cliff Robertson and Hugh "Yum" O'Brian.

Here's the plot, paraphrased from a helpful reviewer from the IMBd:

Released the same year as "The Sound of Music", you won't see any nuns or singing children trotting through this film! The action is on a far seedier level. Ms. Turner plays a bored, despondent socialite who passes her long afternoons in the Acapulco sun with local gigolos while her husband (a former gigolo) turns the other cheek. Things get ugly when one of Turner's playthings washes up onshore---dead. (On his wrist is a bracelet engraved with "Love is thin ice.") The police investicate whether it was suicide or murder. His former girlfriend (Stephanie Powers) comes to claim his body and attracts the attention of Turner's husband. Meanwhile, O'Brian (yet another aging gigolo!) is bedding rich vacationer Ruth Roman (Hugh's pick-up line: "Haven't I seen you around?" , Ruth: "Could be, I've been there"). and trying to get Turner's attention as well. It all culminates in an overheated, eventually hilarious climax involving a bull! The chief assets of the film are Lana's clothes (the Edith Head concoctions cost a then-staggering---even now-staggering $1,000,000!) and the ultra-macho, hairy-chested, leathery-tanned, sexually insatiable, skimpy swimsuit-wearing O'Brian! Lana's outfits will please any fan of glitzy, over-the-top, drag-queeny get-ups (The swimsuits with matching cover ups alone could make Ru-Paul drool). Hugh is a revelation. He trots around in teensy, clingy trunks, sporting a lean, hirsute figure and displays much virility in the form of surfing and beach fitness. My favorite quote: Hugh O'Brian, stands in front of a mirror in shorts patting his flat abs and says "How long, oh Lord, how long..." Recommended for fans of lurid, tasteless, over-the-top Hollywood camp drama. Once seen, Ol' Wyatt Earp can never be thought of the same way again. HOT!

The film wins camp bonus points for having a seperate featurette "LANA TURNER'S MILLION DOLLAR WARDROBE" just on the CLOTHES for this film!

re: 'I Hate Hah! I HATE that Qveen!'

i clicked on this thread to say Queen of Outer Space --"I hate that Qveen!!"

but you all beat me to it. i'm too busy feeling chuffed about peter jennings.
i know Mommie Dearest is camp--but there is a lot of truth in it for me. joan via faye reminds me very much of my father and some of his tirades when i was a kid--and you never knew what would set him off. my father is /was bi-polar and raging for most of my life. so while i know it's camp--it gives me chills -- and that scene at the swimming pool is SO TRUE TO LIFE.
i like The Trouble With Angels--starring Roz Russell & Haley Mills directed by Ida Lupino.

"Tell them Lylah's coming--just as soon as she gets into her harness!"

The Legend of Lylah Clare

This is the best bad movie ever made about Hollywood. There are no words.

Starring:
Kim Novak
Peter Finch
Michael Murphy
Ernie Borgnine
Rosella Falk
Coral Browne (completely and totally over the top in an over the top movie)
and in a 2 minute cameo right at the end, Lee Merriwether

They don't know how to make movies this bad any more.
