It's fine, Carlos. I expected as much from those longtime posters who have not yet interacted with me. SonofMammaMiaSam and JustAGuy are legends and I completely respect their opinion.
Once I finally meet up with Whizzer in person, maybe we'll take a picture for all of the skeptics! LOL
I have gained some important perspective and look forward to addressing this next week when they return from vacation. Sometimes "crowd sourcing" for honest reactions can be therapeutic in a way. Thanks again to everyone for the feedback.

Without knowing your sister/brother-in-law and only imagining what my fears would be..I would prepare myself for when the parents find out and they lash out at anyone nearby. Wouldn't be surprised if you are a victim of their possible unhappiness by being accused of influencing or encouraging your nephew's coming out.
Yes - we know that sounds totally stupid but those are accusations by ignorant people when they are stressed.
Liza...big hugs and well wishes for a remarkable coming out. Strength to you and your nephew.

What kind of relationship does your sister and her husband have with your parents? It sounds like they are pretty supportive of you and your own husband, so maybe they could actually help your nephew navigate his way through this as well.
And, for what it's worth, I see plenty of 13 year olds wandering this city, on the subways, on Metro North and LIRR without adult supervision. It's not like this is the first and only child to ever be allowed to take a train by themselves to meet a family member.

Yes. Exactly, AEA. I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. It is completely normal and routine for kids who grow up right outside of NYC to travel in on their own or, at the least, with minimal supervision. I'm not saying every kid does it and I'm not commenting on what's right or wrong. But the simple fact is that it happens all the time.

"Kharma baby"
This is KHARMA, a professional wrestler and entertainer:
This is karma, spelled correctly, the Indian-based concept you probably meant to say when trying to be a smartass:

I don't have a kid (or any nearby nieces or nephews) but I just checked with a few office friends, who all said their kids started traveling by themselves around 12 years old. Not late at night, and not cross-country, but certainly in and out of Manhattan, e.g. taking NJ Transit to visit grandma.
