If anyone is inclined to contact the superintendent of this school to voice your opinion, his name is Dr. Patrick Martin. PMartin@twpunionschools.org

Posted: 10/13/11 at 4:56pmThis is definitely a fine line. Will she be fired for her beliefs or because she stated her beliefs on Facebook? God knows how many teachers across the country share her view, but if it doesn't interfere with her job and she doesn't express these views in school, should it be a terminable offense? I don't like her or what she said, but it's obviously her personal religious beliefs. Unless there is evidence to suggest she's using these beliefs to influence children or turn a blind eye to violence and disobedience targeting gay children, then it's opening the door to firing teachers for any personal opinion posted on Facebook.

Posted: 10/13/11 at 5:02pmYes, she is certainly entitled to her opinion. However, she did not make her FB comments Private, so anyone, including her students, could see them. A school is supposed to create a safe environment for kids, and we all know how impressionable kids can be. There could be some kids who would use her comments as validation to bully a gay student. It certainly is not the environment I would want my child exposed to.

And really...whats the difference if she was a white teacher saying "blacks are disgusting...their spreading like cancer"?
Either way...she is degrading somebody for what they are. Doesn't matter what the content is. It's offensive, and does call her character into question esp. with the new bullying law in NJ

She should be fired for tweeting this:
"I love watching movies over and over again! LOL It's an art. Watching The A-Team for a umpteenth time!"
She probably likes ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS as well. Sad thing is, if she is fired or punished she will get job offers from Christian networks,Fox News, etc. She be asked to write a book,do speaking tours, and she'll be on talk show after talk show eating up her 15 minutes of fame. While doing so she'll make some serious money. This will encourage others to do the same.
For a teacher to speak like this is disgusting. I doubt she even cares about all the teen suicides or the bullying that takes place nowadays.

Imagine that you are a closeted gay high school student. For whatever reason, you find a comment your teacher has made on her facebook page calling you perverted and comparing your homosexuality to cancer. There have been recent laws put in place so that you wouldn't have to face these awful comments from other students without serious punishment happening. If a teacher exhibits the same behavior, shouldn't she have to see punishment? Furthermore, because she posted it on her public facebook wall, every closeted gay student at the school facing any number of problems can be hurt by her comments. If students should face punishment for this, teachers, who are supposed to be role models for students, should not get off easily. She can say that she doesn't like it, but I think she really crossed the line when she compared it to cancer, essentially calling it disease. She has a right to free speech, but there are ways to express your views without attacking anyone.
At my school, they make it very clear that teachers can't share their political or religious views with students--they can't state their positions on any issues because it is their job to teach us in an unbiased manner and develop the critical thinking skills that allow us to make our own decisions on various debates. One teacher of mine recently explained that as public figures, teachers must give up some rights to free speech (or something along those lines) in any situation where a student's opinion could be significantly affected. This woman, regardless of her stance, has made strong political and religious views clear, openly in the eye of her students.

Posted: 10/13/11 at 7:44pmRomantico, you're probably right, but it doesn't change the fact that she should be fired. An openly racist public school teacher would probably be fired immediately--an openly homophobic one should be, as well.

But we don't live in that world, AC. We live in Birmingham in 1963 as far as our rights go. It's ok to hate us. It's ok to tell people to hate us and to teach your children to do so. Half the people or more in the world don't like us and a good portion of them would like to see us dead and a lot of them want to do that themselves.
We're nothing but faggots and dykes and their God says they have every right to hate us, taunt us, bully us and hurt us. And our leaders and so-called role models tell them they're right and justified in those feelings. We are the n*s of the world and I'm sorry if you take offense to that but it's true. And until our leaders come out and say it's wrong and ACTUALLY MEAN IT by taking a stand against this and passing actual laws to protect us, not state by state or county by county, but actual LAWS that everyone must follow to ensure our physical and mental safety in this world, that's exactly what we are.

Knox, 49, of Union Township, is also the faculty adviser to the high school’s student prayer group, The Seekers Fellowship, the local chapter of a nationwide organization.
I wonder if the school has groups for other religious groups to meet and pray. And does her prayer group bully the other prayer groups?
Furthermore, why does a public school even have a prayer group? Churches have youth groups for that very thing.
She's evil and she should not have access to impressionable young minds that she can twist or confused young students that she can hurt.

She has a point though... just like having cancer is a choice, being gay is a choice.
And if not, then what kind of idiot who is a self proclaimed religious person would think that the way her god created people is a mistake?

Posted: 10/14/11 at 10:19pmI once knew a school counselor at a college who (on her public Facebook), had pictures that were anti-Israel/pro-Palestine. I know it's different, but I've always wondered where the line is drawn.

When I was in High School, my ultra catholic spanish teacher decided to spend an entire period discussing how much he hated gay people and got the class started in a discussion of how much THEY hated gay people. Throughout he would make it a point to say stuff like "How ya liking this, Jack?" I reported him to the counseling office and my mother even contacted the assistant principle (who was at the time a really good friend of our family) and she was told that it was a predominately mormon (Mesa, AZ) area and that I should just get used to it.
Then in my Senior year in High School I was thrown against the lockers in the hallway and then punched in the chest which caused me to black out. When I came to all the kids were standing around laughing and the principal (who as a teacher I had to work with later) stood there and did nothing. The bell rang and everyone, including the principal, left me on the floor. I was then told that for the comfort of the rest of the student body I should drop out.
