equal rights meaning marriage? no, the Pope would not want Catholics to support gay marriage because, in the Catholic viewpoint, marriage is between a man and a woman. being against gay marriage does not always have to do with being against homosexuals as people.
That's right. Actually, the Church is against any marriage that is not for the intent of procreation. So, it isn't just against gay marriages; but, also marriage between a man and a woman who's intent is to not have children. Why anyone would care what the Catholic Church's rule were, unless you really wanted to be Catholic, is beyond me.
I've got it!
(Actually, it's the idea of a Datalounge genius)
Pope Pourri I
The response of a gay Catholic friend who lived through early days of the AIDS crisis:
After a 27-year reign, Pope John Paul II is dead. He was the spiritual leader of 1.086 billion people on earth. Think about that. There are only 285 million of us here in the United States. However, over 50 million are Catholics. I mean that's power baby! If he had stuck to spiritual advice that likely would have been fine. But over the years this 84-year-old Pontiff went way beyond matters of spirituality. The tributes and celebrations of Pope John Paul II's life and legend have got me thinking about his scary, real impact and legacy on the HIV and AIDS world communities. And it's a legacy that will likely piss you off. I'm cognizant that it's a niche area of his papacy, but it's our community's niche. I was raised catholic. Spent every Sunday at Holy Family Church on Fremont Avenue in South Pasadena, California. When I was a child it was all done in Latin. I zoned out looking at pretty windows and listening to pretty words I didn't understand. When I was older I became mad as hell. Pope Paul IV banned contraception 37 years ago. That was pre AIDS. While you can make a solid argument that decision was flawed at the very least due to our planets overpopulation, it was his successor that arguably caused more death than any other leader of any kind in history. Time and time again this spiritual leader expressed compassion for AIDS “victims” yet demanded his flock avoid contraception. “Condoms promote promiscuity” has long been the mantra of the Catholic Church direct from the Vatican. The 1st World I'm fairly certain believes for the most part this is silly but in so many other worlds, every mandate from the Vatican blocking contraception is literally killing thousands. The President of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family said in 2003 that relying on condoms to stop AIDS was like “betting on your own death”. What? Thankfully the World Health Organization disagreed and stated at the same time that condom use could reduce the risk of HIV infection by 90%. Problem is, the World Health Organization doesn't have 1.086 billion followers. In September of 2004 the Pontiff spoke of AIDS and said, “These can be avoided above all through responsible behavior and the observance of the virtue of chastity”. Just last January the ailing Pope reaffirmed the “church teachings” of abstinence and marital fidelity to stop AIDS and it forbids condoms. “Forbids”…Wow. He stated that he believes contraception is part of an attack on the “culture of life” because it blocks the creation of children. In our world children are rarely if ever born out of anal sex. In the world where AIDS is a heterosexual disease with children born infected at alarming numbers, isn't prevention smarter? The Catholic Church is growing fastest in Africa where AIDS is decimating the entire country. There are 125 million Catholics in Africa. In 2003, Nairobi Archbishop Raphael Ndingi Nzeki said, “AIDS has grown so fast because of the availability of condoms”. Lord truly have mercy! In sub-Saharan Africa there are 35 million people living with AIDS. As you watch the many celebrations of Pope John Paul II's life, remember his take on us. Homosexuals are sinners and condoms promote promiscuity. Condoms are “based on policies that foster immoral and hedonistic lifestyles and behavior favoring the spread of evil”. Aaron Brown at CNN keeps repeating on TV that the Pope, “died with dignity” in his apartment at the Vatican. I wish we could say the same about the millions of God fearing Catholics we have lost to AIDS. May Pope John Paul II rest in semi peace.
Thankyou for that Paljoey.
I agree, though I also look at many of the great things he has done.
I think we should at least wait until after his funeral before we start attacking the man and his policies.
The death of anyone is sad, and we should respect that.
In a few weeks I will be happy to talk about my hatred of some of the Pope's policies, but for now I would rather be respectful...
