As the word continues its deathwatch on Pope John Paul II, I was wondering what name the next Pope-to-be will pick upon being chosen by the College of Cardinals.
I must admit, I think that for the last fifty-odd years, Papal names lack a certain oomph and glamour. John, Paul, John-Paul ! and John-Paul II - ENOUGH with these homespun, everyday names. They just aren't...Papalicious enough.
What about Sylvester, Agapetus, Formosus, Sabinian, Dionysius or Zephyrinus? Looking over this list, one sees that the possibilities are endless with so many snappy names to choose from. I was surprised to see how many Clements, Benedicts and Innocents there were (they were REAL big in the eighteenth century).
Personally, I might opt for a classic name with the proper authoritative zip...like either Sixtus and Urban.
Of course the dreamiest variant would be Pope Joseph-Urban I.
All the Popes
George Bush.
I really don't understand the point of having A POPE. Can someone explain it to me?
Well then explain it to me and we'll see, you ****rag.
You're absolutely right. I'm so glad you know my mental capacity. You're the one that can't even spell "anything."

I think it should be just "The Pope"
like "just jack" on Will & Grace
I don't know that anyone ever addresses them by their names to begin with.

The simple answer to why there is a Pope, is that the Catholic Church is a major organized religious group, with 1 billion 700 million members. Since its inception, there has been a leader. The first being Saint Peter. Most organizations have a leader. The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

The current Popes are considered the Bishops of the Vatican City.
St. Peter never did establish churches in Rome, technically he wasn't the first Pope, but you are taught that he was to keep history in sync.

Huh??? St. Peter is buried in Rome. The first Christians were led by him. Every Pope can be traced back to him. Not sure what you're talking about. Unless you mean that he wasn't elected and he didn't establish an organized religion. Yes, that's true, but the origins of Catholicism can be, historically, traced back to him. He was the first head of what was to become Catholicism. Name a historical Christian faith that didn't have its roots in Catholicism?
How about
Pope Mary Allouiscious
or
Pope Miriam Makeba
or
Pope Hillary Rodham Clinton
or how about denouncing the title, since noone has figured out that no matter how hard we try over the many centuries, one person will NEVER be able to control the world!!!
I mean, I understand that the Pope is the "leader" of the C.C., but does he actually DO anything?
He passes laws for the Catholic Church:
"No condoms for sex - if you get AIDS, that is your problem, you should have abstained."
"Homosexuals are an abomination and we must not allow them in our church or schools - as a matter of fact, don't even look at them, or you will turn to stone."
"Give all of your earnings to the Church so that we can help the poor - by building gold statues and other churches as big as cities"
"Kiss my ring."
"Worship me, for though God says not to worship idols, I am not an Idol. I am a rich man in a robe who waves to people."

Oh my! You haven't been aware of just how much the Pope has done during the last 26 years?! From the fall of Communism, to the bridging of Judeo/Christian gaps, his enormous acceptance by young people (when he appeared in France for a youth rally, for example, all the experts predicted that he would attract no more than 400,000. 2 million, 500,000 showed-up. He was a major ecumenical ambassador. The most travelled Pope. He even got Fidel Castro to put on a suit, and fawn over him. As the leader of the CC, he runs it. Yes, he has a cabinet of executives; but he runs it. Well, it's far too much to get into. You could research that on the internet.

Of course, Justice has put into quotes, statements that cannot be directly attributed to the Pope.
how about Pope Joan?
My priest at home is a Benedictine monk and he took on the name Severin Messick. Now there's a name that strikes power and fear into a people! Of course he is also probably one of the nicest and most easy going priests I've ever met but he's got a cool name!
"Worship me, for though God says not to worship idols, I am not an Idol. I am a rich man in a robe who waves to people."
Actually, the Catholic Church does not recognize the commandment against worshipping idols. They split up coveting into 2 commandments (neighbor's wife, neighbor's goods) to make up for the number difference.
Which explains why there are so many golden statues in St. Patrick's Cathedral.
It's not about love. It's about Greed.
A very close friend of mine works at one of the Catholic schools that is closing. He attended a meeting with the monsignor and other officials. It was clear in that meeting that they had no concern for the children or the future unemployed teachers. Their concern was more about money. My friend was almost sued for making this statement public.
Actually the Catholic Church does not condone worshiping idols. There is a great amount of respect and love for the Pope from many people because of what he has done and because of his relationship with God. The no idols thing falls under the first commandment. If you want to use the church's art and statues against it, the statues and art are there because people could not read so they had to visually show them the messages of the Bible. Would you call the contemporary worship services of many christian denominations today sinful because they were reaching out to people in a way that they could comprehend it?
Have you BEEN to St. Patrick's Cathedral????
Yes the church has this great tradition of art and yes the church was filled with corrupt members and still has a few here and there, but many looked upon getting to work on the cathedrals as an honor and a way to show their devotion to God. If you were a woodcarver you didn't have much money of your own but it was a way to give back to the church. After Vatican 2, we have much different outlook on things. Have YOU been to most recently built Catholic churches? They are pretty plain. Actually i would bet that most of the modern day Protestant Mega-churches cost more to build. I am Catholic and I don't worship images or things or statues. As a matter of fact I can't recall one single Catholic I know who actually worships them. http://web.archive.org/web/20030604154434/http://ic.net/~erasmus/RAZ475.HTM
This probably states it more eloquently than I can.
