Netflix users - I have a question for you
#1Netflix users - I have a question for you
Posted: 7/5/11 at 6:28pmI'm tempted to buy a bluray player with streaming abilities. After reading a little about Netflix I learned that not all of their stuff is available for streaming. Does anyone have any idea as to how much of their inventory is available to download? Is it most of their stuff? Maybe half of their stuff? Only the popular stuff? Any thoughts or advice on this or Netflix in general would be appreciated.

I would say that only about 30 % of their content is available for streaming. But that is still very good. I love it. They are also re negotiating content rights with Sony right now.. which means some stuff that was under their Starz banner might not be available right now. Go ahead and get it.. you wont be sorry. Here is a article that might help you.

Posted: 7/5/11 at 6:59pmI have it and never use it. Granted I'm not a big TV watcher to begin with. But it's not their popular stuff. I'd say it's exactly the opposite...mostly the unpopular, 2nd rate and obscure stuff. Though it does give you another option of things to watch when there's nothing else on. But I ran out of things to watch once I'd exhausted the movies I already had on my on-demand queue.

I use it all the time. Yeah, there's a lot of crap on there, but sometimes you'll find things you would never have watched otherwise that turn out to be great. If nothing else, they do have a LOT of TV shows on streaming.
I hope they keep adding the library, though it's quite frustrating when stuff gets removed before you get to see it!

Posted: 7/5/11 at 7:27pmI'm sure they will be adding since Netflix wants to make a move away from physical disks eventually.

I have 479 titles in my disc queue. Of those, 59 are available for streaming. I have 34 in my streaming queue which about 6 don't offer discs.
Netflix will always have a delivery problem. If they ship discs, they have to deal with the post office, who regularly decide not to deliver mine or deliver them late. If they go completely streaming, they have to deal with internet service provider's spotty service. So you can be watching a movie and then suddenly it stops while your internet provider takes a break.
Netflix is fast becoming the AOL of online entertainment.

Posted: 7/5/11 at 8:22pmCurrently, I have over 300 titles in my streaming queue. They do have a LOT of stuff available, but it really depends on your own personal tastes. I watch through my PS3 with a cable internet connection and never have a streaming issue. I especially love the TV shows and BBC miniseries they have available. The availability of their streaming content will only continue to expand at this point.

Posted: 7/5/11 at 8:55pmThey have a bunch of low budget and independent films on the streaming service. There is no shortage of foreign animation and horror films. New releases occasionally go up, but they're usually limited to a month or two. Netflix does have a ton of TV series for streaming and is getting more and more content every week. They just got a bunch of the Criterion collection and all of Quentin Tarantino's pictures very recently.

I very seldom have a problem with the streaming. If it goes down, it's usually because my internet has a problem, not their issues.
As for the discs, the delivery is incredibly fast for me. The discs are necessary because there are so many things I want to see not on streaming still.

Posted: 7/5/11 at 9:37pmNetflix has been a godsend. And you never know what's going to pop up available for instant streaming. Toy Story 3 has been available for instant viewing since it was released on DVD, so it's not always their "second-rate" stuff.

Posted: 7/5/11 at 10:11pmThanks everyone. After reading your thoughts I've decided to give it a try. They have a 1 month free trial so I will see how I like it. And you really can't beat $7.99 per month for unlimited streaming.

I love it. There's always movies coming up that I've never seen before and you can even give movies a shot that you're on the fence about and if you don't like them, just hit stop.
Plus they have all 12 seasons of MURDER SHE WROTE available to stream instantly. You can have a 24 hour a day 10 day marathon.

That's really how I feel. I've had different plans on and off throughout the years and right now I just do the online plan. I find it's actually pretty good when I just want to watch random episodes of old tv shows, which I like to when I can't sleep and stuff. I think it's really just the kind of thing where your experience is dictated by what you want to get out of it. If you think you should be able to stream new releases, then it might not be for you.

#15Netflix users - I have a question for you
Posted: 7/6/11 at 10:20pmNetflix is the best. I can't wait to get settled to start getting it again. I was planning to use the streaming feature before I moved and can't wait to use it. There are a lot of movies that I want to see that are included in that option.

We have the 1 disc plus streaming option, and we use the streaming waaaay more than the discs. We do watch a lot of TV shows, but I've also been enjoying looking through the more obscure movies, and especially the documentaries. Also, they rotate new stuff in periodically, so even if there's nothing there you want one week, check back the next week. They've recently added quite a few things to the musical theatre section, too. Overall, I'd recommend it. Between Netflix for older stuff, and Hulu for current shows, we see pretty much everything we want (with the occasional less-than-legal show thrown in for good measure, but not too many of those.)
Right now we're watching Star Trek: Enterprise. They just added the whole series to streaming. :)

The streaming content is better for TV shows than new movies. New movies typically are not available to steam until they premiere on one of the cable movie channels, but you can have the new movies mailed to you.
Movies are being added to stream all the time and there's a surprising amount of queer cinema to stream, but if you like old TV shows... take your pick. Netflix has tons and tons of TV shows, mostly all of the seasons, available to stream instantly. I've spent the last few days watching old twilight zone episodes which I had never seen before.

We're going back and forth between ST:TNG and old Married With Children episodes.
I also found The Hard Times of RJ Berger - a short lived show from MTV that's pretty funny...

morosco, glad to hear you're enjoying it! We don't have a blu-ray but do have a Roku box and stream Netflix through it.
For us the "problem" is more deciding what to watch on it than finding something to begin with. We get in different "moods" as to what we like to watch -- like for a while we were going through old Twilight Zone episodes, some of which my husband (who is four years older than me) didn't remember ever seeing before, and I for sure didn't. I just finished watching Boys Over Flowers Vol. 1 (Korean drama based on a Japanese manga). Old classic movies and shows....stand up comedy....Brit shows....kids' movies/shows. We love it!
We have and use other channels on our Roku box, but Netflix is the one used most often.

Funny, Jbarafan - we have the same problem - we can never decide what to watch!
The quality is usually fantastic - we hardly ever have any troubles with it.

Posted: 7/12/11 at 4:47pmYeah, I just got a email from them. My $9.99 plan has just gone up to $16. And since, as I said earlier, I never use the streaming, I'm dropping that and just keeping the disc part for $7.99 I win!
