Jane - I did really like Mary.

Nathan, keep looking until you find a fitness regime you enjoy - try using DVDs at home by yourself, that way you're not intimidated by anyone else. There are all different kinds of dance dvd's, kickboxing, stuff you might find fun.

And do yoga! It stretches out your muscles and gets them used to being worked, builds up strength, and just FEELS good.

Obesity isn't really measured in pounds, but in fat percentage. What you can do is this:

Multiply your weight in pounds by 705; divide by your height in inches; divide this number by your height in inches a second time.

That measures your BMI. That then goes into four brackets, if you will.

A BMI of 18.5-24.9 is "normal," 25.0-29.9 is overweight, 30-39 is obese, and anything over 40 is morbidly obese.

Biking is my favorite thing to do. It's low impact on the joints, gives a good cardiovascular workout and is fun. I also like spinning, but that is a lot more intense. There are LOTS of things you can do in your home. Standing push ups for example. Just stand in your doorway, put your hands on the door frame and mimic the motion of a push up. Lifting large bottles of laundry detergent, etc. All are great ways to build muscle strength and lose weight.

If you have a Playstation, Dance Dance Revolution is a really fun way to exercise. Jumproping is pretty good too.

Cutting calories helps with weight loss, but exercise is the real key. I was on the rowing team in college and in the best shape of my life. After graduating to a desk job and not having the motivation to work out just for myself I started packing on pounds even though I was eating the same as before.

I'm hoping a job change will help with my self-care attitude, because I really hate where I'm at right now.

Obeisty is NOT healthy!

It can lead to diabetes, poor blood circulation and a host of other problems.

Thanks for that formula, shiksa! I got 22.8! :)
I've recently become obsessed with that show "Work Out" on Bravo. On one episode, they went in this water tank thingy to measure their BMI. They said the "excellent" range for women is 13-19 and for men it's 5-15.
I would still like to lose a little weight, or at least tone my muscles some. Anyone have ideas for excercises I can do in a small NYC apartment? I've tried doing a pilates DVD, but I don't have enough space in my living room to do all the stretching & leg movements.

Hmmm, ava, that's tough - I'll try to give that some thought.

I know I still have a ways to go, but it's just great to know that I'm finally in the "normal" BMI range.

ava - I think that the specs given on Workout (I saw that episode) are actually a little stricter considering the woman on that show are professional trainers. Personally I think 19% bmi for a young woman is a little bit low - if you got down to 13% its a different ballgame. Although people come in different sizes, and if someone is naturally smaller/thinner, it could be totally healthy for their frame. Thats why its hard to tell from a single range whats best for everyone, you know?

As for exercises - the step videos are pretty good. I can't do those because they hurt my shins, but my mom did those for years when we lived in a tiny apartment. You only need a small area around the step itself for doing lunges, etc. Its a great workout tho.

19.4? Damn. I want to be at the bottom of normal. re: Obesity Can Be Healthy, Dammit!

Oh, and I found a great diet! It's called the Have Your Permanent Retainer Mess Up And Make Your Bottom Teeth Really Sore When You Can't Afford A Trip To The Dentist Diet. It works wonders!

skinny wench = small boobies.

I would not mind a higher number -- if only there were a way to direct the fat to a specific area....

Shutting up now.

Women. Border. Militarization. Socioeconomic effect of NAFTA. That's all I am thinking about now.

If I look and feel good, that's all that counts for me. I don't care what the weight, measurements, or BMI is. I can't go by charts.

Actually, she's not getting any fat taken away. She has no fat. She weighs less than 100 pounds. She's just getting some new parts added.
