its foolish to compare the government of a country with the actual people. for instance, Russia, Ukraine never enslaved black people like America did. but that didnt make all americans racists.

OF COURSE "russians" and "ukrainians" are no more homophobic than "americans" or "swiss" or "blacks." almost without exception, they are homophobic to the degree they are religious. people here don't hear much about the eastern orthodox because the catholics and protestants take up all the homophobia publicity in the united states. this is what happens when people of average intellect are allowed to believe that these stories from the desert of palestine are true.
what can people do? well, for one, if they are members of russian orthodoxy here in the US or europe, LEAVE. it is obscene to donate money to institutions that use every cent tax-free to behave in this way. it's ALL made up, from the wandering in the desert to the sermon on the mount. at least have the dignity and love for self, your brothers and sisters who happen to be gay, to choose something made-up that loves you for who you are.

i love how people who have nothing to sacrifice want those who have worked all their lives to reach a goal to sacrifice years and years of hard work.
it worked so well when russia boycotted the LA olympics and the US the Moscow olympics. the games went on without a hitch and all it did was allow the other country to up their medal count.

Jimmy Carter's boycott of the Moscow Olympics in 1980 was wildly unpopular. Sports are just more important to Americans than human rights.
Johnny Weir will have an interesting choice to make- I'd love to see him go, do well and be s out and proud as he can be. If he got arrested that would do more than a dozen boycotts.
