Calling the filmmakers "tourists" is a bit of a misnomer -- I was expecting to read a story about a couple of visitors who brushed up against each other or shared a bed or something, not a group of filmmakers working on a project about gay rights in Russia.

Not looking to blaming the victims here at all, don't get me wrong. The Russians do seem to be going out of their way to harass gays and anyone who even brings up the topic. I'm wondering how the Olympics will handle it, or if they'll even bother at all. There's no way there's going to be a large-scale boycott at this stage, but I think that Russia's future as an Olympic host is going to be limited in the extreme.

This is terrible. I won't WATCH the Olympics with that attitude. And Putin is crazy. Something needs to be done about him. I think the Olympic Committee or whoever is in charge should re-examine the fitness of Russia as a host. The Olympics are supposed to be about tolerance (heck there are openly gay athletes from the U.S. and other countries). It's not 1936, let's not have a repeat performance where we ignore the issues of scapegoating and intolerance.

It's utterly disgusting what is happening there, i did post about this when Madonna did her recent tour there and they were harassing and arresting her fans.

My theatre company has written to the Olympic commission and so far so have 90 percent of the actors who have worked for us over the past 7 years.

This HAS to stop, and good lord Sue, give it a rest, this appears to be a thread for people who want to stand up and fight for what is right, if every time people wanted to fight for something they said 'oh it will never work' we would never have gotten anywhere.

Sometimes you have to break a bad law and suffer the consequences to get it overturned. I admire the arrest-ee's conviction in taking the consequences.

China hardly has equal rights for gays--but you're completely right. Of course they still have many ghastly human rights issues--and many people did want a boycott, but they don't have such a blatant, highly flaunted law as Russia now does.

Absolutely agreed--to be clear. And I wanted to point out there was an awful lot of discussion about boycotting--and frankly, while it's hard to really compare any of these awful things and pretty useless, I do think with Russia's very recent, very very public laws and reports that this would make a much clearer statement. Anyway, as you imply, it's a moot point and neither here nor there.

I don't think any of those companies will "pull sponsorship" of the games.

I'm really hoping that some of the media covering the games talk about this. It would be an incredible platform to let people who don't follow LGBT news to learn about what's going on.
