Unless, of course, the Russian government heavily controls and edits the broadcasts and interviews shown on Russian television, which will be most of the country's exposure to the games. Otherwise, they would have to actively seek out certain internet content from other sources, which isn't much different than anything they can do today.

It was addressed in the change.org petition that Diva posted.

"Human Rights Watch also expressed concerns that Russia had impeded efforts to create an Olympic Pride House in Sochi, potentially ending an Olympic tradition that began in Vancouver. Its founders hoped to offer information regarding homophobia in sports and promote LGBT rights during the Games, but Russian authorities said the Pride House would “contradict the foundations of public morality and government policy in the area of protection of the family, motherhood and childhood.” The organizers have since appealed to the European Court of Human Rights."

Basically.

At this point I think a full fledged Boycott would be very unlikely and while it would create a major global splash it wouldn't really help the Russian LGBT community. Putin already knows his views are not shared by most other countries. I think a Boycott would make him feel even more powerful. On the other hand, making it a platform as suggested by Tazber's article would at least attempt to empower the LGBT community there. That is of course if the Russian media allows it.

Not true.

The countries Putin cares about are not Western European countries but anti-gay countries that share his views: Oil-rich Muslim countries and emerging African nations. China probably won't protest his new law.

So this is a win-win for Putin. The West objects and he gets to peacock to the creepy anti-gay forces in Africa and Asia that he is the leader of the "moral" world.

It's very similar to the way Hitler got the support of almost the entire Near Eastern, Middle Eastern and North African world: He peddled his hatred of Jews, first to the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini, and then to Syria and Egypt and told them he would exterminate the Jews in their countries too, if they would join in his battle against Western Europe.
