I am of two minds about this; I completely understand the importance and power a boycott would indicate, but part of me also thinks the even more astounding moment in history would be the moment any Olympian is actually arrested for this "crime." To my knowledge, I am not aware of any active Olympians being arrested during the Games. Not boycotting, but proudly defying such a law could create the global impression that Russian officials enforcing it are the shame, not the athletes who'd be arrested for their "crime." A civil disobedience tactic might create an even more powerful optic than a boycott, though I am more than mindful of what potential horrors the individuals subjected to the Russian criminal justice system could be exposed to (and for whom protection from such horrors should be paramount, given the ideals of the Olympic Oath.)
It all is very complicated to me, and I respect and appreciate all the well-reasoned and argued opinions presented by those such as Fry, Rogers, and Weir.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

It seems to me that the IOC is siding with Russia on this:
"Gay Star News asked the IOC what they thought about plans for athletes to wear rainbow pins or hold hands during the opening and closing ceremonies. if you think about it. it really is something they must do. 100 countries, each with different issues. suppose Egypt wanted to wear an anti-jew pin, or israel a pro west bank ribbon, or Venezula an anti-usa pin for instance.

Henrik, first let me be clear i do not agree with the stance they have on gays. what i mean is, in the US Cock Fighting (the bird kind) is not allowed. but it is very popular in Hispanic countries. WHen i was in Europe early this year, you are not allowed in the churches and some museums with Shorts or exposed shoulders if youre a girl. i thought it was dumb cuz i wear mostly shorts and tank tops. but i had to agree or not be let in.

Right, but the issue is not whether should one choose to go to a country one has to either abide by those rules or take the consequences of disobeying them - which isn't debatable, either one goes and complies or one stands up to unjust laws knowing one might well be arrested, charged, even punished. That's just a fact. And in that context, we are talking about an individual's decision to go somewhere or not; and if to go there, whether or not to be civilly obedient or, taking the consequences, disobedient.
Here we are talking about something very different.
Here, the issue is whether the IOC should hold the games in Russia.

Henrik, first i think of course Russia should be awarded games. Russia in all its forms has won more medals than any other country, it owns more of the world then the next 3 countries combined. the last games they had the USA foolishly boycotted it, which caused USSR to foolishly boycott Los Angeles. The USA has had a dozen, france and italy which are the size of some russian farmes has had multiple olympics
Second, the Olympics is NOT about Politics. its supposed to suspend them and bring all countries together dispite the differences
Third, if Olympics had to worry about all the laws in each country that are wrong or outdated. they would probably be in only Switzerland every time. Alot of people, alot of countries finds the fact that the USA kills its own citizens to be brutal and barbaric. THey consider the USA support of Israel to be wrong. They consider Israel to be a puppet. dont forget starting wars in afganastan, iraq, syria etc, and dont forget sending drones around the world to kill.
I think the athletes should do what the americans did in mexico, some sort of gesture on the medals stance. nothing offensive or obscene. but something to get the message out.
