On Monday, Russia Confirmed Enforcement of Law During Olympics

Yes, this needed its own thread. A Russian official released a statement on Monday confirming they will enforce their anti-gay policies during the Olympics.

How is this country not in an uproar right now? Why is the media not blowing this up? Here's the full story: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/08/12/official-confirms-russia-will-enforce-anti-gay-law-during-the-olympics/

Thanks for posting this, Liza's.

And the answer to your question is obvious: protecting the safety (much less the rights) of gays is not much of a priority, particularly when compared to the $$$ garnered from the Olympics.

as much as i disagree with this law, when in Rome, you must follow the law.... if you went to Saudi Arabia, i doubt very much you would walk around in anything other then a Burka.

On Monday, Russia Confirmed Enforcement of Law During Olympics

IOC officials beyond Rogge have begun speaking out against the law’s enforcement during the games.

“They have accepted the words of the Olympic Charter and the host city contract, so either they respect it or we have to say goodbye to them,” Gerhard Heiberg of Norway, who organized the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer and chairs the IOC marketing commission, told The Associated Press over the weekend.

C.K. Wu, an IOC executive board member from Taiwan, told the AP on Monday that the IOC is serious about the issue.

“The Russian authorities, they know how serious … the IOC (is). We are not joking,” Wu said when asked if the games could be taken away from Sochi if the Russian response to the questions on which Rogge has sought clarification from Russia does not satisfy the IOC.

Thanks, Taz. I'm just worried that the IOC is talking big but won't do a thing to stop it. Even if Russia changes its mind at the last minute under global political pressure, will it really matter?

There are still many racist, homophobic communist Russians (such as one poster here) who will be in arms reach of those attending and participating in the Olympics. I'm concerned for their safety, considering how violent and hateful Russians truly are.

The whole thing scares me.

The fact that there is so much support amongst the Russian people for these horrible laws scares me.

And their defiant and dogmatic tone is borderline zealotry. This level of hatred can only lead to violence.

But Meghan and Cindi McCain were working so hard to bring hate levels down! And with Dick Cheney on our side---

This makes me sick. Yes, I am worried that a similar incident like what happened in Munich could happen. I know those were terrorists, but any act or violence towards anyone at the Olympics I don't want to think about.

I think Weir has a lot more to be concerned with than only being arrested. I fear what may happen to these people IN Jail. It makes me think of this quote from Shawshank Remption: I'll pull you out of that one-bunk Hilton and cast you down with the Sodomites. You'll think you've been ****ed by a train!

I understand that there is more to Johnny than just "out-and-proud gay man", but there's also more than just "Olympian", too. It's preventable martyrdom.

Again, Johnny, is it worth it?

This is scary. The IOC talks a good game, but they need show Russia that they're serious. They could've easily announced, for example, that they had five cities in contention to host should Russia not back down. Or something. Otherwise, it's just an empty threat, and everyone knows it.

Let's remember that straight folks can be prosecuted under this law. It's not just Johnny Weir who will be at risk. It's anyone who chooses to open their mouths and speak up. And...I don't know...but I can see the importance of showing up and making a big F*CKing deal out of it.
