Sue, it may well be true that the Olympics are supposed to suspend politics and bring people together. But the Olympics are also about nationalism, national identity, a host nation revealing itself to the world and celebrating its patriotism. That's what all Olympic games have been about to a large extent, it's what the Berlin Olympiad was about, and it's what the Sochi Games will be about as well. Like it or not.

Secondly, I agree with you that of course there is an argument to be made that many politically objectionable nations have been and will again be awarded the Olympics.

But that's not the entire point. I happen to think we should boycott the Sochi Games, even if the laws would be suspended during the games, and you don't; we clearly disagree.

However, the point here isn't only about human rights violations in Russia.

What this particular thread is about is this:

AT THE VERY LEAST, a country that is hosting the Olympics should not create a hostile, threatening atmosphere for the people who are participating in and traveling to the country for the express purpose of competing in the games or otherwise being part of the games as journalists and spectators. That is not too much to ask, is it?

By effecting such a policy, it is the host country that is making the Games about politics and not those who stand up and say NO you can't threaten to oppress Olympic athletes and their supporters and still expect to hold the Games. That response is not "about politics" in the sense you have posed that phrase; rather, it is about common sense, respect, courtesy, sure, but what's more, it is about basic security and freedom from terror.
