I wouldnt have nominated Alan Arkin for LMS. I thought Carrel gave the award worthy performance in that film...and Murphy deserved the oscar.

Cate Blanchett should have at least two, maybe even three Oscars by now. However I actually do not hate Paltrow's winning. I think she is divine in "Shakespeare in Love." And unlike Cate, she hasn't been invited back as a nominee since.

A bag of Skittles could have bested Sandra Bullock the year she prevailed.

I loved both of Sean Penn's victories!

Colin Firth should have won his Oscar the year before for "A Single Man."

Madbrian, quite agreed about Judy Parfitt in DELORES CLAIBORNE. She's brilliant in that role.

Julianne Moore's staggering, brilliant and heart-rending performance in THE HOURS should have won over Catherine Zeta-whatsername.

Francis Coppola's direction of THE GODFATHER should have won over Fosse's for CABARET.

Steven Soderbergh's script for SEX LIES AND VIDEOTAPE and/or Spike Lee's for DO THE RIGHT THING should have won over DEAD POETS SOCIETY, that was a real low point.

And they should just redistribute all of the Oscars won by AMERICAN BEAUTY and THE ENGLISH PATIENT to other, more worthy work. Except for Juliette Binoche's win for Best Supporting Actress.

And I'll say it -- Kate Winslet should have won for LITTLE CHILDREN over Helen Mirren's work in THE QUEEN.

Should-have-been nominees: Paul Giamatti for American Splendor and Sideways. James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal for The Secretary. Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb for Sid and Nancy.

Julianne Moore (Far from Heaven), Kate Winslet (Eternal Sunshine) and Amy Adams (Junebug) were robbed in their respective years. Joan Allen should have been nominated and won for The Upside of Anger, same with Tilda Swinton in Julia...

Far too many thoughts on this subject, but I've noticed that I tend to agree with their Actor/Supporting Actor choices more often than not.

madbrian, it still surprises me that Kathy Bates didn't get nominated for Dolores Claiborne. Same with Parift. It's such an underrated film. Is it because it's halfway between serious and horror Stephen King? The tone is odd but it fits the story.

It's amazing it took so long for Christopher Plummer to get nominated, and then a few years later to win.

Danny Glover, never been nominated. Donald Sutherland, never been nominated.

Kathleen Turner not nominated for Crimes of Passion, Prizzi's Honor, Romancing the Stone, The at of the Roses.

It still angers me that neither Ed Harris nor Julianne Moore won Oscars for The Hours.

Gabourey Sidibe acted circles around Sandra Bullock the year they were nominated.

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

Delores Clairborne is a tour de force by Bates and should've been a nomination for her, but it was too soon after her win for the academy, unfortunately. Parfitt and I think Straithairn both shouldve been nominated. It shows how thorough King is in defining his characters. Please let someone make films of Rose Madder and the tower series!!

We came close to a Dark Tower series. Ron Howard pushed hard for a TV series/mini-series and theatrical releases to tell the story. I think it was a film, a mini-series, another film, another mini-series, and a final film. HBO wouldn't play ball and no one else had the budget they needed to invest in 3 features and two series that might flop.

It was 5 years. Jodie Foster and Hilary Swank won their second Best Actress Oscar 3 and 5 years, respectively, after their first wins.

THAT thread again.

I stopped taking the Oscars seriously after Annette Bening was snubbed AGAIN back in 2004 losing to the last horse to win the US Triple Crown.
