Oscars: that was an awards show?

It's hard to explain why things are funny. I guess the simplest explanation is that it was a non sequitur?

I think what Phyl is trying to say is that there's no hidden meaning. It was just something random that was said. The humor was in the delivery.
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia

Phyll, I didn't get it either, so I figured it was about a film that Streep must have made which dealt with Hitler or something?

Yeah, I thought the Meryl/Hitler thing referred to something specific at first, but then realized it was supposed to be randomly absurd. It didn't work for me, either. Sort of like the George Clooney bit. I didn't know why Clooney was giving a serious stare and why whenever they mentioned his name, they just stared silently back at him. What was the set-up for that schtick?

I don't know, Matt, but the Clooney act made more sense to me than the Streep joke. I wondered why it was so hilarious to the audience. It MUST have a real meaning!

No, I think it's just the absurdity of thinking of Meryl Streep as someone collects Hitler memorabilia.

Not yet, Phyllis! Where the hell did that Clooney bit come from? Martin and Baldwin obviously scripted their reaction, but why was Clooney not smiling? If he was in on it, what prompted it as a joke? I felt like I missed something that set up the gag or perhaps it was based on some inside joke. The audience laughed dutifully, but I had no idea what all that business was about.

"I think it's just the absurdity of thinking of Meryl Streep as someone collects Hitler memorabilia"

That's the way I took it.

Was anybody a bit upset that Lauren Bacall received her Honorary Oscar at the "Technical Awards Show"...or whatever ever it is officially called?

Instead of seeing a montage of her film work (which would have received applause upon seeing Bogart) and hearing her speech...we had to see people from "So You Think You Can Dance" dance to music from the scores and listen to that long intro to the Best Actor and Actresses...the longest being Michelle Pfeiffer's "tribute" to Jeff Bridges!
And being that I'm a stickler for consistency I didn't like that some people were talking about the nominee's nominated work...while others were talking about the film they made with them.

On the other side...I did find it funny that Kristen Stewart was caughing on stage while presenting and the "werewolf" Taylor Something was looking kinda grossed out by it. Also, she seemed just as bland on stage as she does on screen. Maybe it's just the way she is.

No, MTV, you are certainly not alone. At the VERY LEAST, they should have had her and Corman come onstage to receive their applause. They were seated BEHIND much of the front orchestra, who didn't even realize they were back there!

I think the decision was made because they're just old folks, and this production did everything they could to crawl up the butts of the younger demographic.

And Ms. Stewart has become somewhat of a 'cause celebre' for me, as I think she pretty much represents everything I disdain about the pandering-to-youth attitude in the industry. She comes across to me as essentially valueless. All I can think of is the monotone whiny daughter from THE INCREDIBLES.

For me, the pandering to the young demographic was the most obvious during that dance fiasco. They couldn't very well change the movie scores, so they had the dancers appeal to the younger generation whether it was appropriate to the music or not.

As much as I tried to pull what enjoyment from it I could, Jane, I think you're right. It was pretty blatant.

Loved every minute of it. I thought that Steve and Alec were very good together, and loved the DAMN Helen Mirren joke. It's too bad that Lauren Bacall's Honorary Oscar wasn't presented on the show.
