That's American media for you. I won't go on a political rant but to say that it means a lot for Israelis to know that the world is paying attention and supporting Israel's right to defend itself.

Yes, Popular. There are photographs of bloodied babies, both Jewish and Arab on the front pages of newspapers and websites.

At this point, I just shake my head at the entire region. I feel bad for the individuals involved on both sides, but when looking at it from a distance, I just mostly think, "Effie, we all got pain."

Wow. My dad - who you have to understand is the most laid back person you'll ever meet and grew up here and understands what it means for "life to go on as usual" when these strikes happen - just sent me an email asking me if I could fly home earlier. Now I'm even more confused about what and how things are being reported cause the thought of cutting my trip short never crossed my mind. Should it have? Am I naive to not anticipate a full scale war I should immediately run away from (i only have a few days left here)? My dads email has thrown me for a loop!

The US just voted on a resolution stating that Israel has the right to defend itself. It comes with the usual sturm udn drang about escalating tensions in the Middle East and how many rockets each side has fired in the last ten years. The coverage is shifting to the sensational (as it does when the mainstream media actually reports on Israel and Palestine) and, judging by some of the writers I trust on Israel/Palestine, it might not be without merit for once.

Just do what you can to stay safe. Decide on what's best for you and go from there.

My instinct in these cases is to go while u can. IF things escalate, u may find urself unavoidably delayed due to restrictions on airspace.

I haven't heard much about it here either. Seemed like a reliable source... Better if it's not true but if you google rockets fired from Egypt you'll see what I was referring to.

So anyway, not to minimize what's going on, but I'm still staying cautious but making the most of my vacation. People around me are in good spirits and life goes on :)

Now Israeli rockets have completely destroyed what was the Hamas government headquarters in Gaza City. That's in addition to destroying the Fajr 5 rockets Iran gave Hamas to use against Israel in the event of an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. But there are more Fajr 5's all over Gaza.

And Hamas has aimed rockets at Tel Aviv.

This is only going to get worse before it gets better.

Thanks for all your concerned replies.. It's a hard reality to describe in words, but one that Israel is very used to dealing with. No one is panicking in the areas I have been in which I understand must seem strange in contrast to what the media is showing. I'd be out of here quickly too if I was seeing it from the outside.

Tel Aviv sounding its bomb sirens is something that hasn't happened since the first Gulf War (ah, childhood memories), so yeah, this is bigger than usual. But...well, any adult Israeli has lived years with the possibility of being blown up, by suicide bomber or otherwise. It's not that it's not a big deal, but it's also not quite the OMGWTFBBQ situation that it would be if it happened in the States.

The bus explosion in Tel Aviv definitely has people more on edge today. My flight as originally planned leaves tonight. Mixed feelings about leaving family/friends behind but glad to be heading home.
