Posted: 9/5/14 at 9:08pmMister Matt, I was just going to post Dorothy Loudon's "Vodka," but the Sondheim mash-up is equally my favorite. Pal Joey, maybe this is something new for you: I recently found via Googling an anecdote that Andrea McArdle told re Dorothy. (I wish I could source it for everyone, but when I was Googling, I did it out of my own interest, not knowing I would be posting my finds.) I think everyone knows that Dorothy had a history of delivering stellar performances in several productions that were flops prior to Mike Nichols' hiring her as Miss Hannigan in "Annie". Andrea says that when "Annie" got good press initially, Dorothy said to her (I am paraphrasing), "Don't let anything happen to you! Finally I am in a production that isn't a piece of dreck." (Dorothy was evidently thinking that if McArdle went down for any reason, the whole "Annie" ship would follow.) Andrea and some of the other "orphans" decided to play a trick on Dorothy and went to a costume shop and got a fake cast for Andrea's arm. Andrea came in one day sporting the cast and "got" Dorothy, who thought it was real. Another Tube of You video worth checking out is the complete video of the 1977 Tonys, when Dorothy won Best Actress in a Musical, defeating McArdle. Dorothy's acceptance speech is pure gold. Anyway, Pal Joey, this post is based on the premise that you appreciate Dorothy. I can't imagine that you don't!

I worship at the Altar of Dorothy Loudon. This is my favorite performance of hers, performing Irving Berlin's "Sadie Salome, Go Home" on a Ben Bagley album:

The same Richard Chamberlain--he sings/sang?
Dorothy Loudon sure sounds like Fanny Brice a la Babs on that great track
Did I miss La Surprise?

PalJoey, I think you may enjoy this 40 year old footage of Montserrat Caballe in NORMA from the Thèatre Antique d'Orange Opera Festival.
This is my favorite performance for so many reasons: Caballe is in the best voice of her career and the drama of the great outdoor Roman theater is heightened by the wind billowing among the ensemble. As much as I worship Callas for her legendary fire, Caballe always won me over in this role as evidenced by this flawless rendition of Casta diva.

Richard Chamberlain sings a few songs on that series of Ben Bagley albums. On one of the the Rodgers and Hart albums he sings "I'm Talking to My Pal," the song that was cut from Pal Joey. I've always loved that song,m because it was the only the musical made to the original structure of the John O'Hara stories, which were letters from Pal Joey to his Friend Ted.
And, yes, I love some Anna Netrebko! And that Traviata is certainly striking, visually. Like a frying pan over the head. (She's dying of consumption and her time is running out...let's have her sing in front of a GIANT CLOCK!) I would have preferred the Wicked Witch's hourglass.
Eurovision 1969? Oh, lord.
And, yes, let us also worship at the shrine of Madeline Kahn and Montserrat Caballe, because, well, DIVAS!
