I think she's done with the reinvention. I think she's going to be desperately miserable as she tries to honor her Live Nation recording contract, unless they decide to let her off the hook because she was their loss leader, paid an outrageous sum in order to lure younger acts with their best output still ahead of them into the Live Nation fold. I know somebody who was in on that deal and they knew going in that any money earned as a result of that contract will be through other artists joining their roster. Like Jay-Z. But since even that model has collapsed, what's Madonna really going to do? Her last big hit was the Abba sample song.
Last week, I was working at a dance club with early 20-something gay boys and the young women who desperately love them, and they FLOCKED to the dance floor for many Britney remixes (which actually sound great on a huge sound system, even though I hate her music in any other context), one Lady Gaga song, and a filthy song called "My Neck, My Back" that'd curl prim and proper Madonna's hair at this point. It was actually much more influenced by Millie Jackson than Madge. The kids chanted the lyrics at the top of their lungs, and did the same for Ludacris's "Move Bitch (Get Out the Way)," No Madonna was played. They don't care. Her career started 30 years ago. She might as well be Glenn Miller to these kids.
So what is she gonna do? Keep churning out pandering to the gays nostalgia ditties to an ever-dwindling audience with bad hair dye, flip flops, and Abercrombie & Fitch t-shirts? This writer/director thing is gonna be her last chance at reinvention, and as Rosie Perez said to Spike Lee in Do the Right Thing: "It's not workin' out.'
