Perhaps the volunteers were hyrdrangeas in disguise

Calvin - If you think you know, PM me. I'll tell you if you're right. And I'd love to know how you reached that conclusion.

Wait someone really thought this story was true about Madonna asking for no eye contact? hahaha
Brilliant

Let's give Midge the benefit of the doubt. Let's say The Globe and Mail (which is a much more reputable source than the British tabs, btw) only got the story half right. Let's say the TIFF volunteers had to face the wall as she passed, but that it was somebody else's idea.

WHY DOESN"T MADONNA TIP?

Because she's cheap? Because she's a bitch? Because she thinks she's above it? Because she's evil incarnate?

I dunno. What's your theory, FindingNamo - and how do you suggest a Madonna fan like myself should react to it? Should I stop buying her records? Burn the ones I already have? Put out a fatwah on her?

Personally, it saddens me a little to think of her behaving this way, but only a little. I still think she's great, and adds to the gaiety of the nation. Hooray.

Wow. I can't believe she does not tip but I have never met her.
She used to live near my dad and he met her a few times because she thought his dogs were cute and would pet them on the street. I used to walk them all the time and hoped I would run into her but sadly never did.

She is one of the richest women I can't believe she was that cheap. Sad. I always tip 20 percent and I don't have money. Awful.

The tip thing is strange because when she stayed in Manchester a few years back for the Reinvention Tour i think it was she was all over the papers for the tip she left the staff at a restuarnt here (a large tip), she also went in to the kitchens and spoke to the chef for awhile about how much she loved his food.

Even if i was not a Madonna fan i would have to say that anyone with half a brain can see that so many stories about her been a bitch are made up, its such an easy story to tell. 'The woman is a demanding diva' yet had no demands during her run of a West End play (Up For Grabs), shes such a bitch (yet so many who see her out and about in London say how nice she is to them) 'shes tight with her money' yet she has given so much to charity over the years and seemed like she spent much of her time in the UK handing cash to schools etc.

I have only ever met her once and she was perfectly nice, many TV hosts (inc Parkinson) say how pleasent she is. Yet apparently now we are to believe that she is making people not look at her.....give me a break, she even thanksed all the people who she apparently treated so badly during her opening speech at the Toronto Festival..........nobody else did.

She's such an easy target for tacky papers to grab some headlines ('Madonna film hated by critics'.....bit of an exagaration) but so many Madonna haters see it and will take the news as golden yet oddly second guess anything nice published about her.

My Dad met her many times and his dogs loved her. I have to admit she is one of my favorite performers and I hope the bitch stuff is made up. All I know is she was very outgoing with my Dad and knew his dogs by name.

Maybe some of the stories about her are exaggerated or downright made up, but as someone who actually had the experience of serving here at a restaurant I can 100% confirm that she didn't tip and that she never once looked at or spoke directly to me. And I know I'm not alone in this regard, as I knew other people when I was a waiter who had the same experience with her. Maybe her demeanor is different in England than it is in other places, but here, I found her to be the stereotype of an out-of-touch, overly demanding celebrity.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Did she order sprouts? Curious because her movie made her very obsessive about her diet. Did she order a salad dry with dressing on the side or a really fattening meal.

Would love to know. My favorite cd was her first one I used to dance to it in High School. You will be my lucky star.

Oh and to the person who said nobody was denying that she told the staff to turn away from her apart from her reps

'CTV's Canada AM film critic, Richard Crouse -- who served as the conference's moderator – was also quick to defend Madge. "I was backstage for the entire time and I was waiting for her and I was looking down the hall when she came in. She did not have a 14-person entourage, as people have reported. And she was friendly to everybody." Crouse told the Toronto Star. "There was none of this ‘turn your back, don't look her in the eye.' She (posed for) photographs, she signed autographs. I think this whole thing is a fabrication."'

AC126748 sorry to hear that, I’m not saying she can’t act the diva, that’s part of why i love her, but all I’m saying is that many of these stories are utter rubbish and anyone can see that a mile off. The whole flower thing was known the next day to be some strange foreign journalist who seems to have a history, yet people keep referring to her been rude to a fan (even some of the press, it makes for a better story)

To be honest people like Namo (who i love) will always jump on stories of bad behaviour of failure from her because he does not like her like a few others on here.

We all like to bad mouth some celebs, i for one HATE Patti Lupone who i had the displeasure of spending quite a bit of time with, vile vile woman. Oddly many know she is a bitch and a nasty one at times, yet the American theatre fans seem to love her

Corine, this was about eight years ago. I don't remember what she ordered. It must not have been too crazy, because that would have stood out in my mind.

My dad died right before 2001 so it is a very long time for him as well. I think he met her in the early 90's and she talked to him but was especially fond of his dogs. He also told me they were very fond of her but they liked everyone.

One thing that could speak to songanddanceman's point is that Madonna famously once told an interviewer that even the stupidest Brit is smarter than the smartest American. So maybe she's a super-Anglophile and the Brits bring natural moisture to her dry muffin. And maybe she is such a unique individual, so inclined to prove she's not just like everybody else, she only tips in cultures where tipping is not expected. If only she could wrap her brain around the fact that in her former country, the US, waiters are paid subsistence wages. But then again, she survived on cheesy popcorn and dance classes so why can't they?

Madonna could never survive in NYC today if she was just starting out. Besides the fact there are no abandoned synagogues for her to crash in, it would be impossible for her to get a job at her former Dunkin Donuts now since she isn't Indian (at least not yet).

Didn't the brother say that wasn't true and deddy was sending money all the time? Well, why can't the waiters make their deddies do the same?

"Oh and to the person who said nobody was denying that she told the staff to turn away from her apart from her reps"

I guess you mean me, but that's not what I said. The statements I read from her reps indicated that it did happen, but that she didn't make the request (one conjectured that it was an outside security firm). I'm confused by the statement you quoted; what was the moderator doing backstage the whole time?

As to LuPone, you've got to be kidding. This board is STUFFED with threads about how awful people think she is.

I usually find actors to be nice but I have a problem with the following;

1. Julie White- I will never forget that she hit me hard in the head when I was a Tony Seat filler and in her seat. She punched me and I had a bruise for two or three weeks. Not cool. Everyone else was very nice but Julie thought it was ok to punch me because I was just a seat filler. That I will NEVER forget. Talk about being a DIVA and she is not even on the A LIST.

Awesome...I have to fit that into a casual conversation sometime...
