At least some of it.
"Under the deal, some of the hotel's interior spaces, including the ballroom, the Palm Court, Oak Room and the Oak Bar -- which were already under consideration for landmark status -- will be kept intact"

Beave, I am ON MY WAY!
(ironically, I was going to meet a couple of friends there this evening but the plans were changed...)
*throws confetti in the air*
BEST news I've heard all day!

Although the last time I was in the Palm Court, there was paint chipping and falling off the ceiling.
...it adds character!
Those restaurants and bars are treasures... Hopefully a permanent landmark status will eliminate any further discussion on this!
I think the best way to celebrate is to chip on a small condo unit in the new Plaza.
Wouldn't it be fun to own a bit of Eloise's past?
And it will obviously appreciate. It's the Plaza! The only question is how much will they ask for even a small unit...?

That close to the park, in a landmark building, on 5th avenue, across from the Paris movie theater...$10 million.

We went to the Palm Court for a 'final tea at the Plaza' on our recent trip (before this news was known) and had one of the worst experiences in a restaurant situation in our lives. After an hour sitting in the half-filled Court, I went to have a 'chat' with the manager, who did finally get us what we had ordered - after another half-hour! The ONLY redeeming aspect of the fiasco is that we didn't pay for anything.
We went because it really was the source of very fond memories. I dearly hope that if they ARE going to preserve those aspects of the institution, they re-think their approach and delivery.
So does this mean there won't be any closure for renovation, or is that still going to continue? And if so, does anyone know when it'll reopen? I'm hoping to stay there in October.
and yet, I was there in January and it was every bit as lovely as I had known from previous visits.
*cough*
Is it still going to closing for renovation? And will it reopen by the fall?

Addy - that's good to hear. It really made all of us very sad. And Beav, that was truly the only thing that we could think of to explain what happened.
Well, hopefully, they WILL preserve it, and we can return to the wonderful experience we've had there in the past
Tiff, I'm not sure. I believe the hotel rooms are now what will be renovated and converted. I haven't heard any estimates on how long they expect the project to take. If I do hear anything I'll let you know...

Side note: Beav - quoting Mama Cass is a VERY quick way to my heart Dream a Little Dream of Me is about as good as it gets for me!
Thanks Addy.
Beav, whatchoo heard 'bout me??
(PS. I haven't made the booking yet - I checked online yesterday and they stopped taking reservations after April 30 in anticipation for the renovation closure.)
Yippee!!! Hundreds of minimum wage jobs have been saved! And the well-off still have a place they can go to berate under-paid, over-worked immigrant workers! God Bless America!

These are not minimum wage jobs. They are union jobs and those people get paid very well.
