"VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI has lifted the excommunications of four traditionalist bishops, including that of a Holocaust denier whose rehabilitation sparked outrage among Jewish groups.

The four bishops were excommunicated 20 years ago after they were consecrated by the late ultraconservative Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre without papal consent _ a move the Vatican said at the time was an act of schism.

The Vatican said Saturday that Benedict rehabilitated the four as part of his efforts to bring Lefebvre's Society of St. Pius X back into the Vatican's fold.

But the move came just days after one of the four, British Bishop Richard Williamson, was shown in a Swedish state TV interview saying that historical evidence "is hugely against 6 million Jews having been deliberately gassed."

Jewish groups denounced the Vatican for having embraced a Holocaust denier and warned that the pope's decision would have serious implications for Catholic-Jewish relations as well as the pontiff's planned visit to the Holy Land later this year."

To be fair to the pope, the fact that the pope participated in the Holocaust does mitigate Lefebrvre's POV somewhat.

It says he was rehabilitated, so what's the big deal? Baby steps, Jews. Baby steps.

This may sound like a dumb question, but it's something I've never understood. How can people just deny the Holocaust ever happened? Do these people REALLY think it didn't happen, or do they just say it for political reasons?

jasonf, I agree with you. I don't understand how when there are physical things that proved that it happened, people say that they know for sure it didn't. I highly doubt that Jews built places to look like former concentration camps just to gain a little sympathy from the rest of the world.

Also, there is one thing I don't get. Maybe it is because I am not religious at all. But, am I the only one who doesn't get it when they talk about relationships between two different religions as if they were talking about two different countries? It reminds me of an episode of South Park where Stan's dad said the N word on national TV and then went to Jesse Jackson to say he was sorry. When Stan mentioned that they should be friends again because his dad had said he was sorry, Token replied "Jessee Jackson's not the emperor of black people."

Yes, we Jews have created this lie and are all in a big conspiracy to say that we were killed and tortured just to gain sympathy. We went into Poland and Germany and built the concentration camps. We have built museums to honor the dead, and even have a holiday to commemorate the dead (actually, that's the day we all get together and laugh riotously at the rest of the world for believing us). I mean, come on!

The so-called Traditionalist Catholic Movement and the Society of St. Pius X are riddled with deep-seated Jew Hatred.

The current pope hates gays almost as much as he hates Jews.

oh yeah, jew hatred runs deep in the traditionalist movement. i'm a big fan of the latin mass and the pre-vatican ii church, but that aspect always struck me as very jarring and antithecal to the very message of christ. if only we could have all of the stirring pomp and ceremony without the sermons about how the jews are running things...oh and that damn prayer for 'em.

"Bishop" Williamson: "I believe there were no gas chambers... I think that 200,000 to 300,000 Jews perished in Nazi concentration camps but none of them by gas chambers....There was not one Jew killed by the gas chambers. It was all lies, lies, lies!"

Jew-hatred is as scripturally sound as gay-hatred. If, in the new era of politics, we are supposed for forgive and dialogue with homophobes, why not with antisemites? Do we really just want to hear people we agree with all the time? I think not!

I disagree with you Phyllis. THere's no call for ANYONE to be a homophobe, anti-Semite or any other type of bigot. By "dialoguing" with them we are acknowledging that their viewpoint is an acceptable one. It's not about people we agree with or not, it's about what's right.

So a guy who actually believes that a man walked on water wants to deny something for which there is a multitude of evidence.

how interesting.

The bishop, not surprisingly, also hates "faggotths," as he puts it.

How any right thinking person can remain a member of the Catholic Church considering how absolutely rotten to the core it is, run by such a nasty group of people stuck centuries in the past, I cannot understand. When you give money to their charities and such, these are the guys you are supporting. No matter what good cause it is supposedly going to, someone else is already doing it better and in a less corrupt manner.
Here's some words from the good bishop.

Calvin, that's just typical of people like you - always preaching "tolerance" and then being INtolerant yourself!

Have any Jewish people reached out to Williamson? Perhaps if they could PROVE to him the Holocaust happened then we'd have no problem.

I could sing the parody lyric I wrote for a New York magazine competition back when I was in high school: "That's why the lady is a lamp."

I lost.

I just want someone to explain why some nasty hate-filled, scripturally based beliefs are acceptable and others aren't. Why don't Jews have to put on a dog and pony show to get people to approve of them?
