Post Office to cut Saturday Delivery

I love snailmail. I still write letters, send postcards - but even I have difficulty getting worked up over this.

So they deliver whatever stuff that was supposed to go out on a Saturday on another day. No big deal. I doubt it will lead to less junk.

Now we'll hear the cavalcade of reminiscences about how there used to be morning delivery and evening delivery and the mailman was your best friend and you used to know the names of everybody on your block and milk was delivered and the cows were happy and there were no negroes in the neighborhood and they didn't let Jews in the country club and you could leave your doors unlocked and Benny Goodman would play on the radio and now the gays want to get married and it's all just worse than it used to be.

And Charles Kurault or Katie Couric will find some wisp of an old woman who's medicine gets delivered on Saturdays and how is she going to survive and they can't take away her Saturday delivery because it's her lifeline.

I do correspond with some folks via regular mail, and I appreciate the frisson of seeing a hand-written envelope in the daily pile of junk, but it's just not that big a deal. Let it go...

Of course it's not really contemporary hipsters in Williamsburg with their internet-ready cameras, telephones, notepads, computers, wrist watches, signet rings, trucker hats and steam punk monocles who are going to "miss" the postal deliveries. It's the people in far rural areas who have zero access to such mod cons as well as the elderly who, I would say, would probably be right to feel concerned that this Saturday decision is just the first step to eliminating the postal service completely. And everybody will miss it when it's gone.

Exactly! The day we decided to let the USPS handle our health care waas the day our country turned to crap.

I didn't know I was supposed to go to the post office to get healthcare. You learn something new every day.

There is a legitimate topic of debate here--do we believe that the government--blue or red--is capable of effectively providing and maintaining a functional health care delivery system?

Turning Goth's comment into an ad absurdum argument suggests that you have no legitimate response.

I, for one, say Yes; I am willing to entrust the creation of an insurance safety net to the beaureaucrats. I think that the USPS has done a pretty fantastic job of delivering mail (snow, sleet, etc.) for as long as the task was relevant--and quite a number of years after that. They may not have responded with the agility of a tech startup in Silicon Valley, but the size and scope of the organization precludes that.
