Not really. It's more Zen-like with Joan. This is who she is and what she does. She doesn't harbor any particular expectations or fantasies. She just goes on doing what she dies.

Any negative reactions or outraged objections are not particular achievements or defeats. They're just part of her day's work.

Like Lampanelli, Rivers is a raving hypocrite who can't take what she dishes. I've seen both of them cry when a negative comment is made about them and they both come up with the flimsiest excuse to justify their comedy. "If it's what we're all saying to each other, it isn't mean! It's not about the actress, it's about the dress! If I can make one person laugh in the world, then that's what matters!" BULLSH*T. I bet one person would laugh if someone put a bullet in her head. Would that make it okay? If we say Rivers is a lying hypocritical unfunny see-you-next-tuesday, but we're also all thinking it, then it's not mean and it's okay, right?

She and Lampanelli can Thelma-and-Louise it into the Grand Canyon. With Ann Coulter tied up in the trunk. They are all pretty much the same woman, anyway.

Looks like a thinly-veiled publicity stunt to me. The book's title is Diary of a Mad Diva. Emphasis on DIVA. She was acting the Diva when she stormed out of the interview. What's not to get? As for her being relevant or not, she's 82 years old and is still doing stand-up and selling tickets, writing and selling books, starring in two successful T.V. series - Fashion Police on E, and her own reality series with her daughter (entering its 4th season) on Lifetime - makes frequent guest appearances on a multitude of shows, and is being interviewed by CNN. I'd say she's doing pretty well. How much more of a comeback does she need to make? As for her brand of humor, you can take it or leave it. Does she sometimes cross the line? Yes. As do many comics. If she was a man (and this applies to Lampanelli, as well) it would probably mostly go unnoticed. In any event, she has plenty of fans, and you can count me among them.

Except she has been behaving this way LONG before this book and it's been increasingly worse. And in the case of this particular interview, Rivers wasn't playing a part, she was playing the victim. Again. Even the interviewer was surprised by that.

If she was a man (and this applies to Lampanelli, as well) it would probably mostly go unnoticed.

And if she were a camel, she'd have a hump. Male comedians do get called out when they cross the line (Andrew Dice Clay, Michael Richards, Tracy Morgan, etc.). They just can't play the sexism card when it happens. Being female isn't an exemption from criticism.

Meh. For me, "insult humor" can be clever and can provoke a laugh when the observation is keen and the wit is sharp--as Rivers' often is--but the toxicity of the atmosphere outweighs the laughs. It's just not the kind of energy I want in my life. The solution is simple--I don't consume it.

Joan's reaction to this thread would simply be to thank the person who started it.

Then she would put the joke about her face not giving her away on an index card and file it away to use it later.

But whether she's punking everyone or doing it for publicity or crossed a line or she's a see-you-next-Tuesday, none of it matters.

When people stop paying attention, she'll die. But until then, this thread--and the people like Jane who find her funny--are her job.

She's a despicable person with whom I have no desire to ever meet. I think she gets a free pass due her longevity in the business, her age, and the personal fortune she's amassed. I moved on from her when she referred to the Williams sisters of tennis fame as 'Venus and Penis Williams' during a televised one-woman show. She then egged on the audience into agreeing with her opinion that one of the sisters looks like a man. And the latest report of the snipe at Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's infant child North was completely tasteless.

To each his or her own, but fame, success, and old age do not trump common decency in my book. I also suspect that half of Hollywood will utter a collective 'good riddance to bad trash' whenever she meets the true death. Hers is the cheapest kind of comedy in the business. Thank goodness Carson isn't around still to witness the monster that she's become.

Done with her and this thread. She's simply not that relevant to me.
