I guess it's not really fair of me to compare them to the service I get on my private jet.

boycott.
LMFAO!!
PLEASE, go ahead and boycott to your little heart's desire.
No one will even notice.
or care.
I'm all for boycotting the right groups and people.
But before I get all "activist" in broad, sweeping terms... I would want to know exactly WHY we're boycotting a business.
Did they contribute to YES on 8 as a business? Did the people who are running the business contribute to YES on 8?
If the leaders of any of these businesses are Mormons, I don't see that as "reason enough" to boycott them. Especially now, when a group of Mormons are currently questioning their church to the point of leaving the faith (which is pretty huge).
I know the Mormon church has supported YES on 8 as a major contributor, and I plan on boycotting any business that they own directly or sponsor directly or fund directly.
But I won't go after businesses unless more can be proven. Did they campaign actively for YES on 8? Did they donate personal dollars to the cause? Are the running a business, or "fronting" it?
If so, I'll boycott.
But if we're just boycotting businesses because their owners or CEOs are Mormons? No other reason but that?
Count me out. I need more "active involvement in Yes on 8" than that.
Thank the pagan idols!
I always stay at Marriotts because they're smoke-free. It would have been difficult to boycott them, but that letter from Bill Marriott makes me think they deserve ALL of my business, not just "most." Good for him for taking a stand, and doing it publicly.
I really respect how he was honest about his affiliation with the church but his support for separation of church and state; love and inclusion; and gay rights.

I've never really been involved in a successful boycott. With all the things on the list, and the inevitably apathy most people feel towards a boycott after a week or two, if it affects them at all. Last time I flew Jet Blue was almost two years ago, and I don't think I've ever in my life stayed in a Marriott.
If we really want to change our status in society, we have to start taking action. I urge all of you who feel strongly about this to find the nearest rally to you this Saturday and go out and make your voice heard. Talk to other people. Find out what's going on next.
It finally feels like enough people are ready to say "our time has come." Let's not squander this opportunity.
We should also be encouraging people with visibility to speak out the way Mr. Marriott did. I'm sure he pissed off some "guests," but that's okay. They can stay at the Holiday Inn.
But in all seriousness, I agree, Phyllis. I don't think boycotts work unless they are very focused and narrow. And even then, they're iffy.

Honestly, except for perhaps Black & Decker, there's nothing on that list I'd even foresee myself patronizing. And I don't buy that many household appliances.
I just don't think we have the numbers for an effective boycott. That CMT guy had the crap scared out of him - and while I have mixed feelings about the whole thing - it does show that people are beginning to start paying attention to us. That's why we need to be HEARD; not boycotts, no stay home days, get OUT there.
And get more people to speak out in support of gay rights the way Bill Marriott did...a man who is open about belonging to a religion (especially bold because of the particular church he belongs to) and who has boatloads of MONEY!!!
The rich do not impress me, but a lot of people are in awe of successful businessmen. (And I do mean businessMEN. Unfortunately.)

anton-thanks for the link. I wish someone can show me how to figure out which companies (Nationwide & in MA) donated money in support of PROP. 8.
Here are the list from MA.
These are the faces of bigotry & homophobia~all 19 of them!

Screw it. I can't be bothered to actually research which companies should be legitimately boycotted.
It's so much easier just to let the mob decide for me and then jump on the bandwagon.
Funny, I donated to No on 8 and did not show up on the database.
Odd.
Edit - I guess because it was late in the campaign, it was not on the sourced DB.

OK, think for a second.
Disney has been very gay-friendly. You are required by law to post your employers information when you donate to political causes.
This man donated on behalf of himself, and no one else - unless you find a donation from the Walt Disney Corp there is no basis for including Disney on your list. I have not checked the others, but an employer cannot prohibit its employees from expressing their political views, especially with private donations.
You need to slow down for a second and take a breath.
Rockstar energy drink should have been on EVERYBODY'S boycott list long ago, considering who created it.
But these others -- again, I wish they would print the reasoning behind it rather than just give a very scattershot list.
Like Taco Bell. Did the Taco Bell corporation give money? Is its owner a Mormon? Was it just one franchise that donated?
Who is George Mautz? Does he actually work for Bank of America in a high-ranking executive position, or is he just some schmuck who works at one of the branches? Considering he's in California and BoA is in Charlotte, I'm thinking the latter is more likely.
I've already talked about Amex earlier on this thread. And Disney, Merrill Lynch (lol, what else could we do to those poor souls, anyway, at this point?), Intel? Again, are we basing this just because the company name came up in the directory? Boycotting a mega-company because of the actions of one minor employee just doesn't seem like a productive use of energy.
These small businesses, like the restaurants and etc., that are wholly owned by a Prop 8 supporter seem like much better targets.
Although the next time I need to buy a naval vessel, I'll be damned if I buy it from Northrop Grumman!
Marriott did NOT contribute any money to prop 8
From Bill Marriott's blog
"Posted: November 11, 2008 4:17:19 PM
As many of you may know I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some might conclude given my family's membership in the Mormon Church that our company supported the recent ballot initiative to ban same sex marriage in California. This is simply untrue. Marriott International is a public company headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, and is not controlled by any one individual or family. Neither I, nor the company, contributed to the campaign to pass Proposition 8."

I agree guys!
I second Phyllis~the BEST WAY to deal with this now is TO GO OUT THERE & PROTEST. As I said, unless someone can give me a concrete proof. I will boycott JetBlue, close my accounts on AMEX & Wachovia-it only takes a phonecall to do it. The small business is an easy target- I think Diva posted a Mexican Restaurant in his facebook.
With a larger company~its really hard, and we really dont want this to be WITCH HUNT. We cant let our passion , anger and frustration consume us. We are better than that!
The only thing we can do right now is to PROTEST and make sure this WILL NEVER HAPPEN anymore! not in any more states!
