Exactly what I do, as well. But WOMEN IN BLACK wasn't playing there or at 34th St. this morning and I didn't have time to go up to 66th.

I really can't wrap my head around going to a movie in the morning--but admittedly I'm not a morning person in general. Even afternoon matinees feel odd to me... But that's amazingly ridiculous--here they only charge those prices for "special events" 9ie when Company showed or the Met Opera or Bolshoi Ballet broadcasts)

I agree, that's insane. That is gouging at its worst. As someone else pointed out, if people keep going, they have no reason not to charge that price. By me it's $10.50 for an evening show and I thought that was bad!

It costs $18.50 AUD ($19.80 USD) for an adult to go to the movies at the most popular cinema chain in Australia. And we don't have systematic discounts (e.g. 'morning' shows etc.) except often on Tuesday ('Cheap Tuesday') you can get in at a reduced cost (I think $11-15 (11.80-16 USD), I can't remember exactly).

I don't know exactly what my point is, I'm not at all saying you should consider yourselves lucky considering you can't directly compare them (consider minimum wage, cost of living and what you have grown up to value as expensive vs not expensive etc..).

But agree that cinemas are so god damn-expensive and it will only get worse!! I think they should try and encourage more attendance through lower prices to get the same gross as increasing the prices to compensate for falling attendance (but I suppose it's a complicated issue).

Oh wow! That's insane. I never realized it was anywhere near that expensive in Australia. Honestly movie prices right now are at a point where unless I really want to see something (which has only been about 6 or 7 movies this entire year), I'll wait until they come on Netflix. It saves a lot of money and I can wait several months for the DVD release.

There's a regal cinemas near me that charges 5 dollars for any movie all day every Tuesday and Sunday. It's the only time I ever see movies in the theater.

Let us not forget $5 a pop to rent 3D glasses. You need a bank loan to pay for concessions. It is surprising they would do this in the face of falling attendance. They wonder why people are staying away.

$ 14 will get you the sequel to Ghostrider in 3D

I am still trying to figure out the 3D 'rentals'. I didn't work in Regal but I worked for a regional chain and we just gave out disposable 3-D glasses that we encouraged people to keep due to germs.

And yeah, concessions are expensive. That's how most theaters make their money.

This news, however, is just encouraging me to use my student/matinee discount tickets and torrent like a madcap.

I took the 3D thing as talking about the additional charge for 3D, which I think at Regal is an extra $6 or $8. Now they also have this new RPX thing that adds on an extra $5. That pisses me off a LOT since they don't advertise in tier showtimes that it's an RPX showing so you vet to the theater and find that your now $14 movie is going to actually be $19 for a screen thats a few feet bigger. That is such a scam, it's not even funny.

Boston (south) suburbs here:

Everything before 6pm is only 6 bucks. Regular price for adults, 9. 3D is 3 bucks more. (In Boston proper, prices are higher.)

While that sounds crazy, we shouldn't be suprised: everyone needs to make a living.

I always buy the Gold or Silver AMC passes at Costco. As long as they offer discounts, I rarely pay full price for a movie. Sort of like Broadway.

these prices are amazing. And to think that top price for a reserved roadshow engagement in 1968 was around $3.50.

That was for Fri. and Sat eve,and holiday performances of FUNNY GIRL at the now gone Criterion, and STAR! at the now gone Rivoli

Losing the Criterion was no great loss. The Rivoli was another matter.Of all the palaces that once were in that area this was the one I went to most. The state & mark strand were tied for 2nd & the Capitol was 3 rd. The only time I went to the Paramount was when it was in its death throws showing Thunderball 24/7. By then, it was a shell of what it used to be. The auditorium was very dark. From what I could see at the top, it was painted pepto bismol pink. The ornate lobby had the indignity of a huge candy stand planted right in the middle.

By the way NAMO, I could care less if they charged $ 25 bucks a pop . It is their funeral. You are a big fan of Socialism except..... . Wait a minute there is no exception.

As a reminder,I did not start this thread & many others chimed in before me. Sorry to burst your little bubble.

I'm trying to remember a time when prices to see theatre or a movie went down. For some reason, it just won't come to me.
