Rick Santorum on Gay Marriage and Brokeback Mountain

SANTORUM: It is. If you think about it, Janet, from everything from Brokeback Mountain to, you know, all the TV shows that you see promoting and affirming alternative lifestyles -- I guess to put it nicely -- you would think that the culture would eventually just move in the other direction. But I think these kind of debates are the chance for a public discourse to counter what Hollywood is purveying to our young people. Not just what Hollywood is purveying to young people, to all people. And it's an opportunity for us to get beyond, you know, 'We should treat everybody nicely.' I'm for treating everybody nicely, but that doesn't mean that we need to change the law to recognize a form of marriage that is harmful to our country.

One week after Santorum's appearance on Parshall's show, a poll by Rasmussen Reports showed him trailing Democratic challenger Bob Casey Jr. by a whopping 23 points – 56% to 33%. Rasmussen called Santorum the "most vulnerable congressional incumbent this election season."

I would like to know just how gay marriage is "harmful to our country".

If someone can name an actual way it is harmful to our country, I'll join the bandwagon supporting the amendment.

That's just how full of bull**** I think people are who claim that my marrying another dude is harmful to our country.

Because they think that many men and women will give up the opposite sex and marry into their own sex. They don't want to deal with the competition. What else can it be? Don't forget the argument they use that if same sex marriage is OK, what's next? Marrying an animal? This is, sadly, what these people believe.

They used a similar argument against enfranchising women. Many people thought it would be the end of civilization as they knew it. Give women the vote and they'll begin acting like men. Give women the vote and they'll neglect their womanly duties, i.e. housekeeping, cooking, childrearing. Give women the vote and the entire family structure will crumble. It's been over 80 years since the 19th Amendment was adopted and the world hasn't ended. It may, but it won't be because of giving women the vote or legalizing gay marriage.
