'Roseanne' Returning to ABC in 2018

The entire Core family cast to return with both Lecy Goranson & Sarah Chalke (Who will be playing a different role)

I disagree. The first 8 season were great TV. The 9th and final season was a train wreck.

Roseanne is an American sitcom that was broadcast on ABC from October 18, 1988, to May 20, 1997.[2] Lauded for its realistic portrayal of the average American family, the series stars Roseanne Barr, and revolves around the Conners, an Illinois working-class family. The series reached #1 in the Nielsen ratings, becoming the most watched television show in the United States from 1989 to 1990. The show remained in the top four for six of its nine seasons, and in the top twenty for eight seasons.

On April 28, 2017 it was announced that an eight episode revival of the series was in the works with most of the main cast expected to return. The series is currently being shopped around to various networks.

I believe the last season was when Roseanne took over as Executive Producer, replacing Carsey/Werner.

Did you watch her reality show "Roseanne's Nuts"? She is.

I'm really looking forward to this, especially with Goranson! Personally, I think the show is one of the all-time greats in American television. The final season was bonkers bizarro, but everything else was fantastic. I still love watching it.

It could be VERY relevant today. They could deal with how people like the Conners felt ignored and wound up voting for Trump, not matter how "progressive" they were socially.

Roseanne isn't the most stable mind these days so I'm scared it could be just ham-fisted with her crazy ideology. Let's just hope she has a strong show runner.

I'm going to assume the last season won't be cannon at all. The last episode was so confusing with David and Mark having actually married the other sibling they were with the entire series, Dan having died from the heart attack the previous season, Jackie being gay, and they didn't win the lottery after all. It'll be interesting to see if they try to keep that, keep that but "nah, Dan lived," or pick a point in the last couple of years to write from that being the "real" timeline.

Like someone else stated, I'm very curious as to how they will handle what was stated in the final episode, where it was revealed that major characters were actually dead and huge changes were made to many of the others. With Goodman being announced as returning I have to assume that it will be some sort of continuation of the "fantasy" of the final season, but I'll be honest and say that I'm not sure how well I'll be able to connect with characters who are purposely being written in a fantasy mode.

I just wonder how they will handle the character of Mark, seeing that the actor died of a heroine overdose in 2002.

But like I mentioned previously, it's Goranson that has me really excited. I've always thought she was talented and was definitely the strongest actors of the kids (including the boyfriends). Her performance was so natural, it was uncanny. Chalke was okay as Becky Lite, but never really seemed to fully gel with the cast.

I absolutely agree. I remember watching an interview with Laurie Metcalf where she spoke about her experiences on Roseanne. She mentioned Goranson being really interested in acting and put a lot of thought into it. Goranson is why Becky was my favorite character during her years. Even in that season where Goranson came back after Chalke did Becky (before Goranson left again and Chalke came back), there was a real difference and improvement in the character of Becky just from the portrayal and chemistry with Sara Gilbert and the rest of the cast, if not from the writing. I wonder if the writers didn't know what to do with Becky really during the Chalke years and thus just made Becky more of a peripheral character.

I know people like to cite season 9 of where things went wrong with Roseanne, but I think Roseanne had already lost a lot of its quality long before that.

My guess based on things Roseanne has talked about in the past is Mark will have died in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I also think Chalke will probably play a newly lesbian Becky's girlfriend. Or they'll stick with "Mark was really with Darlene and David with Becky" and they'll make Darlene in the relationship with Chalke's character.

Wow, people like Becky? I think she might be my most hated TV character ever. Every week I just wanted to slap her. It was a relief when Sarah Chalke took over because Becky finally became likable.

Didn't like Darlene either, actually. It was all about Jackie for me, and Dan to a lesser extent. I think even Roseanne knew that Metcalfe and Goodman carried the show.

I remember an interview Laurie Metcalf did on NPR during the run of The Other Place where she talked about the early seasons of the show and how much Roseanne looked up to both her and John Goodman in regards to acting technique and creating a character. She said the Roseanne recognized coming in that her work as a stand-up had in no way trained her to be an actress and she really relied on the two of them to help her through.
