Well, I don't want to sound like Chicken Little with "the sky is falling," but our entertainment industry in Hollywood is changing very rapidly now. The WGA strike just one of the latest growing pains. So, is iTunes, and the HD format war, and YouTube.

Things are changing very rapidly now, and Hollywood as a COMMUNITY is scared. The first thought and concern is to prepare for the future, whatever that may be. So the WGA is striking primarily over the potential royalties to be gained from "downloadables" and other "new media."

It's that undefined "new media" that ultimately has people scared. Bill Condon recently said it best, when he pointed out that this strike has Hollywood big-wigs shaking in their boots. Why? Because it's not just about "downloadables" and writers getting their just due. It's about a shift in how media is created, produced, accessed and DISTRIBUTED (which is a key word for the studios).

YouTube and iTunes more than anything have major studios and record labels wondering if they will have a future at all. THAT's the scary part.

If you or I could record a song or film, a little mini-movie with our home equipment... and then post it on the Internet on YouTube or iTunes... and instantly reach a potential worldwide audience of consumers, fans and patrons... where exactly does the future of the BIG HOLLYWOOD STUDIO lie? The BIG RECORD LABEL?

They are very worried right now that the writing is on the wall for them. They can see that it's possible in the coming decades ahead that they will be rendered obsolete.

THE END.

That's what has them worried more than writers' residuals for "downloadables" and "new media."

The future is very scary for them. And very uncertain.

The Internet has created a level playing field among creators of entertainment that is GROWING at a rate the studios can't keep up with. And they're worried they won't be able to compete with it either.

The times, they are a chagin'.

Excellent points Besty. It's all about access. In my day, I would have never had the equipment to make videos and such. My son and his classmates made a video for their chemistry class using cameras and i-movies on MAC. They did it all themselves. We never had that access when I was growing up- you would have had to pay big bucks at a production studio. It's amazing what kids today can do with their computers!

Mom---And they don't need publishers or networks or studios to reach a worldwide audience anymore.

They can post their created work on the World Wide Web at a minimal cost and IF their project strikes a chord and creates a buzz (which is no greater a hurdle than any major studio film faces)... they can tap into millions of viewers and fans.

This has MANY a studio exec. quaking in their boots.

I can see how big studios are shaking but it's also amazing to me how many really creative people there are in this world and how sometimes, even a high school student can produce a high quality film that in the past was produced by professionals who probably had to fight their way into the industry.

Exactly, mom.

So you have this whole community in Hollywood of agents, talent management companies, unions and studios---big bucks to be made by all---that are (as egocentric as they ARE) worried how "relevant" they will be in a few years... if a kid from Iowa with talent, a clear vision, decent enough equipment and perseverance... can bypass ALL of them and make a name for him (or her)self without ever dabbling in their Hollywood community.

It's not there just yet... but as I said... and as Josh Brolin brought up tonight... it's backfiring on them already... and it's coming. Faster than they can think.

Thank you for posting that, Besty.

Yes, the people who make money off the talent of others do have a lot to worry about. It's amazing what one website with free hosting can do, and all in the most unforeseen manner.

I once took a casting director workshop (back when I didn't know how much I hated the workshop industry) in which the harried, distracted, God-complexed, super arrogant c.d. said, "I can sense an actor's energy before he walks into my office."

One of a billion stories about the people in the 'community.' Doncha just loves 'em.

I thought the "In Memoriam" segment was done well. We lost so many in 2007-2008.

I think it was done well, but really the most touching "in memoriam" portion of the ceremony for me was Daniel Day-Lewis speech, you could really see his heart-break, I almost cried from looking at him.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Yes, his tribute to Heath Ledger was wonderful. He surrendered the limelight to an actor he admired and respected.

The video portion "In Memoriam" was what I was referring to.

I didn't see the ceremony, but Daniel Day-Lewis' tribute to Heath Ledger was beautiful. Class act, he is.

Very classy. And Day-Lewis is obviously more comfortable talking about other people than he is about himself. Love him.

Daniel Day-Lewis's remarks:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5HAzZ8GgUg

"There are many actors in this room tonight including my fellow nominees who have given me that sense of regeneration. Heath Ledger gave it to me. In Monster's Ball, uh, that character that he created seemed to be almost like an unformed being retreating from themselves, retreating from his father, from his life, even retreating from us, and yet we wanted to follow him and yet were scared to follow him almost. It was unique, and then of course in 'Brokeback Mountain' he was unique, he was perfect. And that scene in the trailer in the end of the film is as moving as anything I think I've ever ever seen."

The gowns were ok. I wasn't wild about any of them. A few that I liked were:

Amanda Bynes' gown, Marion Cotillard's, and Forest Whitaker's wife's.

What does everyone think of clapping during the memoriam segment. I know its always done but does anyone think it just makes it a popularity contest. I noticed only 5/6 people got a really good applause and the rest a clap or two and I even heard silence. How about they just wait until the end and then clap for everyone.

I think all applause should be held until the end. It will never happen, though.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!
