SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE SEASON 8.

It's that time of year again. My favorite TV show of the summer is back. This season will return to the old format of 20 finalists hoofing it together, and bring back the “All Star” partners once the contestants are cut down to a Top 10. Plus Mary Murphy is back on the judges panel. She also revealed why she did not return as a judge for season 7, and she also talks about her cancer:

"It was never quite clear why you weren’t a part of the season and Mia Michaels replaced you. What happened?

You have to understand that [before season 7], we did two seasons [in one year]. I was involved in the Australian and Canadian version [of So You Think You Can Dance]. When they laid the second season on us, which was like in June [2009], we had just finished doing the auditioning. I went right back out on the road and was doing the auditions again. It was the busiest year of my life, because I had already booked out my fall. I had so many commitments and I really like to live up to my word. I literally was red-eyeing it back and forth, criss-crossing this country.

Fox did make me an offer [for judging on season 7]. Things fell down in negotiation on my side, and I started having some major tragedies in my personal life and was absolutely dead exhausted. We came to the conclusion that I would choreograph, and I came back for Las Vegas week, and then my house started spiraling out of control. I was taught to be keen and very vigilant. I knew I had a tumor in my throat, but I was so confident and in denial that it would never turn to cancer. I went along my merry way.

Then in the summertime, I started becoming extremely exhausted. Then I slowly became losing my voice, and then I started having a hard time swallowing. My friends were insistent that I see a doctor. In September, there are so many judges on the finale, you don’t really get to say anything, which was fine with me. [Laughs] I was just getting through it, which nobody knew at that time. I didn’t discuss it with anybody. Honestly, I didn’t really think I had a problem. [Laughs]

In September, we negotiated and I said yes, I would come back for a three-year deal. Two weeks later, I was told I may never talk again, and that I [likely] had thyroid cancer. It was a little bit of a roller coaster. I had some personal deaths that year — two were not expected and one was. Everything happens for a reason, and looking back, as much as I hated not being on the show, it was definitely a time in my life where I needed to be off."

"How is your health right now?

Right now, I’m doing really good. In February, after the radioactive isotope treatment, I am cancer free. I was back on the roller coaster again, going back uphill again and doing the [SYTYCD] auditions."

Yes! I love this show! These Atlanta auditioners are phenomenal! Still hate the sob stories and how they don't showcase some of the other performers who get through but I look forward to this season!

Love this show...Mary used to annoy me, but after last year and how nasty Mia was (and often incoherent) I'll gladly take her back.

Now the only thing I have to hate about it is Nigel the homophobe.

I love this show! I agree, doodle, Mia was so nasty. I'm glad Mary is back.

There was so much talent last night. I liked that girl with the short dark hair, The art student. She was so good..and I love when dancers come back, so I was happy to see Ryan (I think that's her name?)

I love this show SO much!!!

Thought last night was great as I'm not fond of the "show the horrid" auditioners. I think its just cruel (for many) and simply encourages those who just want attention to try out. I thought they kept the humiliation to a minimum.

So excited its back!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Please, Mia was never nasty. But I agree she wasn't meant to be a TV judge.

Mia was definitely a negative presences on the judges panel.

I have always appreciated and loved her work on the show but I definitely disliked her as a judge.

The coverage on the auditions this season is the best they've had. Very little camera time for the obvious attention whores (they can eliminate the dancing Santas and faux Ringo Starr children for all I care) who have ZERO entertainment value. The talent has really kicked up a notch. We're seeing levels of difficulty in the auditions alone that were probably inconceivable during the first few seasons of the show.

Loved that cute little musical theatre guy from Jersey (why was he sent to choreography with that much technical talent and not some of the B-boys/girls or krumpers?) and Jeanine's sister, Alexis. Can't wait to see Vegas. It's going to be a very tight group this year.

The Irish step dancing girl was simply breathtaking. And that female ballroom dancer with the flowy red dress. My jaw dropped watching her. The Japanese girl and the tomboy girl were also incredible. Is it just me, or does it seem the audition coverage is leaning pretty heavily on the females this season?

Was there any need for them to spend so much time on the Lady Gaga wannabe and her freak father, Ringo Starr?

Yeah, that was a waste of time. Although they've not shown as many of the freaks as they have in past seasons.

Thing is, girlfriend wasn't even remotely interesting! Show me people dancing, that's why I watch the program.

So far, my favorite girl is Melanie Moore with the short dark hair. She is so strong and creates sine really beautiful lines.

My favorite boy is Nick Young, the tapper. Watching him in that last number with all the guys you can tell he can do way more than just tap. His a la seconde turns and pirouettes were perfection.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE SEASON 8.

A looooooong time ago, I worked in Garland. My great-grandmother lived in Wylie (and my sole living grandmother lives in Mesquite), so I know the area pretty well.

I was really hoping Alexis would make it, but overall, I'm happy with the top 20. And I loved having them perform as an opening exhibition as the chosen were revealed. I don't see the ballroom girl lasting long, I'm afraid. I have a feeling she's going to too weak in the contemporary and hip-hop categories.

Mr. Matt, I agree about the ballroom girl. And unfortunately she's my son's favorite. Oh well.
