I don't know that there is too much more to be seen of Emma Thompson's role. As I recall she had some heavy scheduling conflicts with the next Nanny McPhee and it was a pleasant surprise that they could get her in for the couple of days. There's probably a bit more, but I don't think we'll get to see her power-serving crystal balls over the walls of Hogwarts.

I've loved Maggie Smith for years ever since I saw her as the older Wendy in "Hook" as a five year old. There could not have been a better actress to play Minerva McGonagall. Julie Walters was also AMAZING with her line towards the end of the film.
Saw it today in 3 D. Surprisingly there were no crowds
I have not read any of the books but have seen all the films as Mrs R is a Potter fan. We have all the DVDS so one day we will watch them all for a potterthon
It was one of the best if not the best of the series. Not sure if 3D made that much of a difference. Truth be told none of the rash of new 3D films have really done it for me. I really enjoyed the ones in the 50's more
The effects were eyepopping. A fitting end to the series.

$92.1 million on opening day that is including midnight gross.
Friday Report: 'Harry Potter' Conjures Opening Day Record
At least one of the Boston theaters played the film on all 11 (or so) of it's screens at the midnight showing.
We went today (2D) and the theater was MAYBE 1/4 full -- but it was a beautiful day out, and I'm guessing tonight they will be packed. (Which is why we went midday -- to avoid crazy fandomness.)
I've enjoyed all the book and movies, but I'm not in the camp of "I can't believe it's over." Everyone knew it was a finite story. (Not trying to judge those that are more emotionally wrapped up in it.) Thought it was GADS better than Part I -- but some of the editing was poor, and all the circling of characters (For the 3D, I'm assuming) drove me nuts. I did cry a few times, and cheered along on a few outbursts. My kids simply loved it.
Favorite line:
I've always wanted to do that spell -- McGonagle.
I'll agree with a few things: Maggie Smith has always been one of my favorite actresses (from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, 1969 -- not that I saw it in '69) and yes, Alan Rickman was incredible.
Double post
I loved Part 1 but Part 2 was like night and day, and thank goodness for that. Maybe it is because I try to apply Star Wars into my everyday life as much as possible but this movie reminded me a lot of Return of the Jedi, in a good way, of course.
Loved it, though I have a few reservations about certain things that were left out from the book, but all in all, a mostly satisfying ending to a great series.
Another one of my favorite scenes

just the way Maggie Smith says Piertotem Locomotor... so badass!
That scene is one of my favorites! I love the look Molly gives her. lol
I also really enjoyed Ralph Fiennes attempt at a Voldemort giggle.
EH HEH HEH!
And then when he hugged Malfoy, it was priceless.
The Voldemort hug was awesome. I was talking about that yesterday, complete with demonstration of the awkwardness. It was probably the first hug he'd ever given.
Not my video, but it's hilarious.

OK, this never happens, but I actually want to go see the movie again just to see what I missed the first time.
I guess the movies was that satisfying that I want to go for another ride!
I thought Maggie Smith was the highlight of the film. The fact that she was given so many great moments, and the fact she was clearly having such a great time- all the while battling cancer- just was awesome.
...completely forgot I already expressed that opinion in this thread. And since the board has been denying me the ability to edit, I now double post.
I guess it was worth repeating.

I must say that Professor M's scene was one of my favorites. She reminds me of Sister Jamesine my favorite history teacher in high school. She was a bit of a bad a$$ herself! (Gawd I hope I don't get into too much trouble for thinking that. Catholic guilt runs real deep. Even for those of us who opted to excommunicate ourselves)

I think maybe I was expecting too much in terms of emotional payoff--I figured I'd be doing some serious crying, but for whatever reason, I didn't. I thought the pacing was off...it felt a lot longer to me than 130 minutes.
I still liked it a lot...the whole series has never been less than good. I guess I just felt some mild disappointment that it didn't affect me more.
Like I have said, the movies and the books have to be judged separately. What I would love to see them do later down the road is a mini series. I can see the BBC doing each book as a 6-10 part mini series. This way they won't leave anything out from the books that the films had to.
I can't see that working for many, MANY years. The actors playing each of those roles are so totally ingrained in the fans' hearts and minds that any other actor would just seem to be an incompetent interloper.
I shared that slight disappointment in not feeling more emotionally attached during many of the scenes. I blame it on the pacing though. Unlike others, I thought the film raced by and was particularly concerned when so many of the scenes during the battle in the castle - when so many beloved characters from the last 10 years were killed - were squeezed into very short clips. Instead of a 'director's cut', I'd like to see a 'fan's cut' released. Released for those who loved the books and wouldn't be put off at all to see a lot of the scenes (which you're certain were filmed and ended up on the cutting room floor) returned to the final version.
I think many here will enjoy reading this.
