"I thought that it was important for the Harry/Voldemort faceoff (and Voldemort's ultimate death) to take place in the Great Hall, in front of everyone, as it's done in the book. The moment had much more finality that way, since EVERYONE (not just Harry) saw Voldemort die."

I agree that was something I really enjoyed in the book. However, I think Yates wanted the classic hero faces the villain alone scene. Still, the film was excellent.

R&H's kiss didn't take place after Ron said the house elves shouldn't die (and Harry didn't get to be all awkward during it, boo)

Well, since they eliminated the whole plot regarding Hermonie trying to free Hogwarts house elves from Goblet of Fire Ron bringing it up now would be out of place.

My friend, who didn't read the books said, "How come Harry didn't name his son James? That's kind of obnoxious." And it would be, but in the novel's epilogue, Harry has 5 kids, one of which is named James, another of which is named Lily, so it makes sense to name his next son after Dumbledore and Snape.

Ah, but upon closer reflection James IS there. Look at the initials on the luggage of his older son. They start with a "J"

Ah, I missed that. As I'm sure a lot of other people did. They should have made that more clear, because it seems odd for Harry to have not named any of his children after his parents.

I wish he would have named his kids Vanessa, Rudy, Theo, Denise and Sandra.

If there is anything that I really dislike in the HP series, it's Albus Severus Potter. What a dreadful name.

Also, I don't like how it seems that nothing has changed, in the sense that the houses are still greatly divided. Harry does tell Albus Severus that Slytherin will have gained a great wizard if he is sorted into Slytherin, but follows it up by telling him that he can choose Gryffindor if he wants it that badly. I always felt that the Slytherin house was wrongly demonized in the books AND the movies, and I thought that after Voldemort died, they would become more united. Even though Draco Malfoy never really wanted to become a Death Eater, he gives his son the awful name of Scorpius or something, which just sounds dark and horrid. I don't know, Rowling could have done so much better with Epilogue, it really is the weakest part of the series.

(Also, I always hoped that Harry would end up teaching Defense Against The Dark Arts at Hogwarts but she made both him and Ron Aurors working for Kingsley Shacklebolt. And then Ginny plays Quidditch for a living. Hermione has the best career, though, working in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.)

Well, that is what they wanted.

I actually thought the tensions and apprehension toward Slytherin was pretty realistic despite that period ending and I could see why JK Rowling chose that route. She has a lot of modern history on her side. There are plenty of people who still envision a lot of countries based on their past, take Germany as one example. I know many people who still will not buy German products based on principle as a lot of German companies were heavily entrenched in the Nazi regime. And 19 years is not exactly ancient history.

But honestly, it was just one kid feeling apprehensive about Slytherin. Yeah, little Albus could be seen as representing the next generation but his parents were apart of Gryffindor and he has probably been raised on the stories about his parents fighting Voldemort.

And I think Scorpius is a much cooler name than Albus and it is a constellation of the sky, hardly a 'dark' name. But I like that in the movie, older Draco looked less spooky. In the book IIRC, Draco was a near dead-ringer of his father in older age.

Even JK Rowling, with all her imagination's magic at her disposal, wasn't about to dream up a world of British boarding schools without competive houses and internecine drama.

Plus, if you look at it, she kind of makes it clear than nobody's all good and all bad. Just think of where that little piece of Voldemort's soul was for all those years. I don't think we're meant to dream of the world after him as being without good and evil.

Well, in the novel, Slytherin House gets redeemed in the final battle, with Slughorn leading the kids into the fray.

That got cut out, and Maggie Smith just snarkily sends them to the dungeon and they are presumably left there.

I just found out about this new thing that some movie theaters have called "D Box" which is designed for some movies (this one included) and the chairs move around following the action, sort of like one of those simulator things at theme parks, except with the entire movie. I'm going to try to see it like this (my fourth time seeing the movie!) sometime this week, and then I'll tell you all my thoughts and whether or not it's just a huge gimmick.

Here's a link to the website of the company that does this, where you can find the closest theatre to you that does this: http://www.d-box.com/en/movie-theatre/

And here's a link to a review of the new movie: http://www.mugglenet.com/DHpt2DBoxreview.shtml

I love Maggie Smith. She gave the impression that she'd been waiting to do that for a long time.

I think everyone who has actively contributed to this thread should read "Harry Potter Should Have Died" by Emerson Spartz. I just finished it this afternoon and it debates several pieces of the books and movies. I would love to discuss it with you guys and it's a short read.

It has kind of opened up my eyes to a lot of what I was feeling but was unable to verbalize about the series. Definitely worth it. Check it out.

I actually bought that book a few years ago, right when it was released. I got bored with its entirely structured and repetitive format and conclusions that I mostly disagreed with. I might try giving it a second chance. I did find those writers' "What Will Happen in Harry Potter 7" book much more interesting, and it's fun to look back on the predictions they made. Perhaps the funniest thing in that book was that in the chart about the odds each character has of dying, they said that Dobby had a 1 in 1,000 chance of dying. Finally saw it yesterday. Severus broke my heart. Ultimately, the entire journey was worth it for me to see Harry as a happy and peaceful father.

The film crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide becoming the only film in the franchise to achieve this.

It also surpassed "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Philosopher's Stone elsewhere in the world) to become the highest-grossing "Harry Potter" film in North America.

Maybe a stupid question but if Harry dropped the resurrection stone in the forest, how did he survive? Also, why didn't Voldemort check to see if he was dead himself? I saw the film again today and that was just so stupid to me that after all that, he wouldn't walk 10 feet to make sure he was dead. And even still, they were connected so wouldn't he know instinctually that Harry was still alive?

I would say because the Resurrection Stone was still close enough to him, and he was still holding the love and courage that the shadows of his parents, Remus, and Sirius gave him.

As for Voldemort not checking, I'd mark that to classic villain hubris that always causes their downfall.

Voldemort never seemed to understand the connection between Harry and himself. He certainly never realized that Harry was the "horcrux he never intended to make." When he "killed" Harry he also fully broke that connection, in essence killing that bit of his soul that had been connected to Harry, represented by that dying fetus creature in Harry's encounter with Dumbledore.

The stone had nothing to do with how Harry lived. Harry lived because when Voldemort used Harry's blood to return, he was carrying on the protection from Lily through his blood, so it lived on after Harry could no longer call Privet Drive his home. The movie completely ignored this and left it up to speculation.
