No it was Eric and Sean that kissed - on the Today show in front of Al Roker in protest to the network cancelling the big Kiss that was supposed to air on the show they were watching on the show...oh god, that's too confusing. It was in Season two, episode 36.

I don't find it despicable at all if he chooses to remain in the closet. Just in portraying his goofy, obviously gay character on Will & Grace for ten years, I'd guess he's done more for gay people in this country than you have, ESLGR8.
I suspect he MAY still want to have a career when this tv show is over, and is hoping beyond hope that he can live Jack down and play different characters.
I don't blame him at all.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 1:15pmOh and yes, SueleenGay, Sean Hayes did play Jerry Lewis in the TV Movie "Martin & Lewis". Hayes gave a moving, honest portrayal that shattered the stereotype that he could only play flaming homosexuals and that he could only do comedy. I hope he's given a shot at more dramatic work in the future.

What did he say at the SAGs?
He's never been politically vocal about homosexuality, why start now? Feelin' the heat from the cowboys?

I didn't realize he was still in the closet. I thought he was loud and proud.
And, I also thought he was fantastic in the Jerry Lewis movie. That movie on the whole was far better than it had any right to be.

"If you see a movie and I'm in it, and the first thing you think of is who I'm sleeping with, then you're not watching the performance; you're watching the personality."

Also...
He saved a man's life in 2001. Courtney Cunninghan, 33, reported that two men stopped him near the driveway of his Los Angeles home, and then robbed him and shot him in the leg. Hayes who was driving in L.A.'s mid-Wilshire district when he noticed Cunningham lying in the street. The actor then pulled over to help the victim, ripping off his shirt and pressing it against Cunningham's wound to stop the bleeding. He then called 911 on his cell phone and waited for paramedics to arrive.

See, I don't think Sean Hayes has done anything for "gays." I think the character "Jack" has. And that's not just Sean Hayes but writers and directors and a network....
And if Sean Hayes is actually gay and he refuses to come out while playing "Jack" than I might have to agree with eslgr8.

"And if Sean Hayes is actually gay and he refuses to come out while playing "Jack" than I might have to agree with eslgr8."
Why?
And how would that attitude dovetail with the personal freedoms that you're desiring for gay people to be who they are without judgement or constraint?

If my "freedom" contributes to the murder, attacks and hatred of other gay people, than I would gladly surrender part of that freedom(aka $) gladly.
edit: this argument has been around forever and it will never be settled. I believe that by staying in the closet you give power to homophobia. To me silence=death. Others don't see it that way.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 2:10pmChita - let me ask you something. You're apparently referencing what you feel is a dangerous environment for gay people. It could also be stated that environments can be unsafe for family members of gay people, especially if the gay people are widely known. Now mind you, I find this all very hypothetical, including the basis for your stance - the debate should simply be about the right of individual choice - but given your perspective, would you advocate Mr. Hayes 'coming out' even if he felt it could jeopardize his family's safety?

Well, that is part of this debate ....we as gays and lesbians have that choice. Is that choice one of the things that is keeping the gay/lesbian community from getting together and saying in one voice "I'm Gay!"
But DG make no mistake about this, I am in danger if I choose to hold my partner's hand in the wrong neighborhood or if I choose to cruise the wrong guy in my local gym.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 2:24pmI just feel that the rights gay people want are part of a basic foundation of human rights - and holding a person accountable for a decision that should be theirs to make seems contradictory and hypocritical to me. The link between that personal choice and the harm you feel it could potentially cause is tenuous and hypothetical, and beside the point of the individual freedom involved.

you know you are right. blacks should be able to decide if they want to be seperate but equal. we took that away from them. that should have been a personal choice. Freedom is not for everyone. Isn't that a lovely argument!

I'm all for being out. And, as a performer with little to no recognition, it's easy for me to be out in my career. Things may (HOPEFULLY) change, and I'll be faced with the decision of how 'out' to be. I'd like to think that it won't be a hard choice (I mean...I've left a paper trail).
I just don't understand how not being open publicly makes him the most despicable person in Hollywood? I mean...he's never lied to you. He's said he's concerned about his career and how it might affect his finances. He's never dated or married a woman. I may not agree with his choice, but I certainly believe it's his choice to make and appreciate his candor on why he won't come out.

I'm not sure WHY Sean would stay in the closet--people will assume he's gay anyway. So I think he's probably NOT worried about putting his family in danger.
Although DG has a point about one's right to privacy, I think that the more people come out, the more the public will realize that they do indeed know gay people and it's much harder to hate a group whose members include your friends, family, co-workers...etc. I can only speak for myself, but my life CHANGED COMPLETELY once I came out.

So let me understand this.....If fighting for human rights affects my potential to earn money than a "little" freedom is better than a 5th floor walk up on 86 and 3rd?

I think it's everyone's choice to decide when and how to come out. I have no problem with Sean Hayes or anyone else who isn't ready for whatever reason.
It's the Rosie O'Donnells of the world who scream their attraction to the opposite sex who bother me. Stay in the closet if you have to - but don't lie about it - it's insulting and demeaning to every other gay person.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 2:32pmThanks Robbie. Why does being a closeted actor make him "despicable"? You could be disappointed, sad, feel pity for him or frustration that he doesn't use his celebrity status to make a statement, but gosh, "DESPICABLE?" Because he chooses not to make his sex life public? I may not agree with him, but I think there are far worse people in Hollywood...I still wonder if it is just sour grapes cuz Stephen didn't get that role.

But we're talking two completely different things, it seems. Who says that Hayes is not out in his private life? I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, that he's not out publicly...like that guy from SPAMALOT (I know...WHICH ONE???).
I may not agree with the choice. But who gives a flying f*ck in a rolling donut what I think?
