I lived in Paducah, KY back in 1997 when there was a school shooting at Heath High School (though I didn't teach there, I knew people who did). I know how hard this can be on a community. Our school finance director has a son who goes to VT. We observed a moment of silence at the end of our school day. My prayers go out to the VT community.

Elphaba, it has been clarified that the comment to which you are refering was only made after a reporter asked the press secretary if Bush's stance on gun control had changed, so the reporter brough the issue up in the first place.

I am not saying I agree with him or his stance, but the person who made the statement (I think she is an assisstant press secretary?) was simply answering a question.

I didn't have access to news during the day, so I am trying to catch up with the story now.
They were just saying on TV that they highly suspect that this was all triggered over a domestic dispute (gf/bf stuff), and that just burns my stomach! My thoughts and prayers are with all that have been affected in any way over this.

It was a baited question by the reporter. The press secretary should have been savy enough to answer without bringing up that comment. This is the ****ing White House, they should be better trained to field instigatory questions like that.
This is just terrible. I can't imagine anyone who decides to simply kill people. It's a horrible thing to even think about. My prayers go to all the friends and family of those victims.
This affects the entire country- my little brother is afriad to go to school tomorrow, and we live in Illinios... There is something just utterly sick and backwards about this, the world is skewed, that's all I can come up with. God Bless
Oh my god. This is just devestating. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and shooter alike.
It's also incredibly scary to think that a couple months ago, there were rumors of a race-incited shooting or riot that was going to happen on my own campus. I can only hope that this incident doesn't inspire others around the country.
Some of the names are beginning to filter out... several students and professors were involved. A real cross-section of our population, which makes this situation all the more tragic. It's starting to sink in that it will be so hard for us to bounce back from this.

Sweet - you must remember that people always find a way to get through. There is no doubt that this is a HORRIFIC moment in time - beyond that for many people, I'm sure. But history is rife with tragedy, and somehow, some way people find a way to endure.
And I'm NOT saying that to say you should 'get over it' by any means. I'm just offering that despair isn't the place that you or those you love will find comfort - or the future.
So many hearts were smashed to bits today, and I can't help but think that anyone who doesn't have at least some sense of the web of humanity is sharing in some aspect of that pain.
But there is still life, and it is shared by those who survive. Depend on those who love you to help you cope - and in turn, help those around you that you love find a way to the future.
The very fact that you feel so much is what will allow you to experience more of life, for that is really all it is made of - the accumulated experiences of your feelings.
Yes, these are among the worst moments that life can bring - but as tragedy has shown before, it is sometimes these moments that will give you the clearest vision of what counts and what doesn't.
My heart joins multitudes in the sorrow for you and your extended family that has been so egregiously harmed. But, you still have family and friends to love and support you, and that will provide the bridge to a future.
Band - I know I, and many others, have come to view their protests as a kind of sign of what really matters. They have been reduced to nothing in the eyes of any thinking person - and don't forget the incredible display of the angels that their Matthew Shepard diatribe produced.
And honestly, at this point, I think the people in charge keep them FAR away from having any impact.
But, the very dark part of me would like just a couple of minutes alone in a room with them with no witnesses.
I don't think anyone ever "gets over" such a tragedy. Rather, people leard to cope with it on a daily basis. Those sick little f**ks at Westboro will stop at nothing to get PR, will they? What is the name of the group of motorcyclists who shielded soldiers' families from them? The Honor Guard? I hope they come out for this one.
As a stated and shared thought throughout the world, our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved and affected by this tragic happening. I don't want to start a thread on this, so I will put it in here. The Gun Owners of America is not a group Iwould ever support, but they now disgust me. From an article

Because it will be safer if anyone can legally have agun on campuses. I absolutely hate everyone who is trying to politize this saying that there should be more guns.
A better way to look at it (at least one that doesn't ignore the people)

High school shooting in the states leave me feeling angry and baffled,ever since columbine ive thought about them a lot
So much so my production company vertigotheatreproductions.co.uk have written a play based on high school shootings called Rage what trys to examine why they keep happening and if american high schools pecking orders and popularaity ladders need to be looked at.
