Charles Gibson is saying that there are unsubstantied reports that the shooter lined up students, and also that the focus was on asian and latin persons. Again, unconfirmed.

I know someone else said this before, but there was a two-hour gap between the first shootings in the dorm and the next in the classroom. What the hell happened there?

31 deaths in one hall, two in another. 15 treated for injuries. ID of gunman unknown at present. No ID on him.

This is truly horrible. I am in regular contact with a computer science faculty member and some of her students at Virginia Tech, as they contribute to a research program I oversee at work. I hope they are alright.

This is unspeakably tragic. And right on the heels of this comes the 8th anniversary of the Columbine shootings.
I really hope Virginia Tech doesn't become a national idiom like "Columbine" has. It makes me sick when a tragedy is boiled down to a convenient buzzword. I wish more people would show a little respect, you know?

I just got back from my class at ODU. Several of my freinds know many students at VTech. And some professors teach at both our schools. This is what I have heard from many people who have spoken with freinds at VTech:

***this is complete hearsay and nothing should be taken as fact***

What I have heard is that the gunman had been havong trouble with his gf. He shot her first and them went on a rampage in the dorm. Subsequently, he went to the Engineering bldg where he had classes and proceeded to shoot classmates and a professor there before turning the gun on himself.

Again, I want to stress that this only what I have heard second hand. Sometimes however there is some sort of comfort (wrong word but I can't think of another) in knowing that there was a motive, such as it is, and not just "random".

Once again my most fervent hope is that the healing may come quickly for those who must now deal with the aftermath, and I wish peace and grace for the 33 souls we lost today.
