Shooting at VT!

mejusthavingfun - I'm sorry, I don't see your point. The federal gov't has done and can do more to help prevent these events, but like I said, they will still happen.

My point is that either the execution of procedures at VTech didn't happen properly, or the procedures in place need to be changed. That is an isolated issue at that campus. [It seems to me as if they have had a lot of problems - bomb threats, the other loose gunmen, etc. - and now the worst has happened. On CNN, students were saying how after the first shooting the lock-down was lifted and then the gunman went on a second rampage. If there was already a shooting, who's call was it to lift the first lock-down?

There's a lot we don't know right now so I don't want to speculate. I'm simply saying to bash Bush for THIS is a little far-fetched.

But I don't want to turn this thread into a political debate. Let's keep it focused on the event, the people, and their families.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

This is what we are getting on the president's reaction -

President Bush was described Monday as shocked and saddened by the mass shooting at Virginia Tech, the deadliest incident of campus violence ever in this country.

"He was horrified and his immediate reaction was one of deep concern for the families of the victims, the victims themselves, the students, the professors and all the people of Virginia who have dealt with this shocking incident," White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said. "His thoughts and prayers are with them."

"The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed," Perino said, noting that Bush and Education Secretary Margaret Spellings held a conference on school gun violence last October. "Certainly, bringing a gun into a school domitory and shooting ... is against the law and something someone should be held accountable for," Perino said.

A gunman opened fire in a dormitory and classroom at Virginia Tech, situated in the city of Blacksburg in southwest Virginia, killing at least 21 people. The gunman was killed but it was unclear whether he was shot by police or took his own life. After the shootings, all entrances to the campus were closed and classes were canceled through Tuesday.

The university reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus — first at about 7:15 a.m. at a coed residence hall that houses 895 people and about two hours later at an engineering building. One student was killed in the dorm and the others were killed in a classroom, according to Virginia Tech Police Chief W.R. Flinchum.

She said that federal assistance is available if Virginia authorities request help. Perino said it was premature to discuss whether Bush would travel to the Blacksburg area.

Shooting at VT!

CNN has student Laura Spaventa who says that she received an email saying there was a gunman on campus, but from what I keep hearing there wasn't a real sense of urgency in the letter...then another email a couple of minutes later that said they should stay where they are. She soon after heard gunshots.

She did say that while she hasn't noticed any difference in campus police presence since the manhunt in August, but she did say that VT is supposed to have one of the best campus police in the country, and she never felt not safe.

I can't imagine the confusion everyone affected must be feeling all day today.

Shooting at VT!

A student on local coverage much earlier said that the law enforcement officer who evacuated him from an unrelated academic building said that this was the worst thing that ever has happened or will happen at Virginia Tech. That gave me a feeling of foreboding about the news to come, but...I couldn't have imagined. I have a class in that building. I hope that this is the worst thing to happen ANYWHERE, ever, because things like this should not happen.

As a member of the Virginia Tech community, I don't want to start politicizing this, but I am offended by the unnecessary second amendment shoutout in the President's statement.

Bush will speak at 4:15. The NRA/Rove conference call was no doubt at 1:20.

The idea of even mentioning "the right to bear arms" on the same day that young adults are mowed down by a semi-automatic weapon is obscene. I think Ms. Perino might have answered the questions along the lines of "this is not the time to talk about 2nd Amendment."

It's never too early to look beyond the immediate tragedy of story. What's worth speaking of here, and it's not "Bush bashing," is the way(s) anyone can purchase such a weapon with apparent ease. A father of a Columbine parent spoke on MSNBC and said that must always be the focus.

We've already heard "this is a wake up call..." How about latest in a series.

Don't worry. We all think it was a horrible statement made by a brain dead human.

This is terrible.....

sweetsiren, I hope you have people who you can turn to for support, in addition to your friends here.

Hang in there, and do not be afraid to ask for help, if you need it.

It's senseless. So much loss...

So many school shootings seem to happen around this time of year. This is around the Colombine shooting as well as Waco. (if I remember)
Sometimes I think we as a people will never learn. How sad and tragic. I hope and pray that the families of those who were killed, and those who survived may find peace.

After this, there will no longer be a Second Amendment right to bear Assault Weapons. There never was and there never should have been.

Shooting at VT!

I am definitely not one to defend the Bush administration. Ever. However, Dana Parino was ASKED by a reporter if this incident has changed the President's stance on gun control. In the last few hours, has the President's stance on gun control changed? It's a stupid, unanswerable question and totally inappropriate for the moment at hand.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

mominator, funny you mention that.

So many things happen this week in April, I always know it because it's the week of my dad's birthday. Columbine happened eight years ago this week, Oklahoma City bombing was 12 years ago this week. That's why so many times they look at terrorism and extremeism because Hitler's birthday is 20 April, this week is a high activity one.

I can hardly believe it. Those poor poor people and their families. My heart is with them in their grieving.

Any word on who the shooter was and/or motivation?

According to CNN, it was a student.

This is so scary. One of my friends goes to VT, but luckily I got in touch with him and he and all of his friends are fine.

Sweetsiren, my heart goes out to you and everyone else. If you need to talk to someone, please feel free to PM me.
