where does one start? there must be bazillions! I think it had something to do with the silent film era, but names escape me this early on a saturday morning - I'll check back later!

Sondheim's chronology in "I'm Still Here" doesn't go that far back. I thought it referred more to stars like Veronica Lake and Linda Darnell.

True. If you're sticking to the context of the song (which I wasn't), then you'd have to go with women like Myrna Loy or Hedy Lamarr. It's just that I associate the term "vamp" more with the silent era.

Imagine a blend of Joan Crawford, Dolores Del Rio, Linda Darnell and Vera Charles.

Nice pics. :)
I love that Pola pic.
I had it on a T-shirt when I was a teen.
Lupe is cool too. Very sultry.
Gloria Swanson had great eyes but prolly not a sloe-eyed vamp, right?

I think La Swanson counts. Also, though not Hollywood, how about Musidora?
The pic you're referring to is Theda Bara, not Pola Negri, but yeah, it's great.
Oops, that's right.
Teens were so long ago.
