That "over-hyped" Irene did substantial damage to this region, even if it wasn't NYC. It was one of the costliest hurricanes to ever hit the country. If it had actually been a direct hit on Manhattan, the damage would have been insane. While everyone in the city rolled their eyes at the storm after it grazed us, people were without power for weeks or had their homes completely destroyed in New Jersey and Connecticut.
There is no such thing as over-hyping a hurricane like this; the worst that can happen is that it doesn't hit and you have a 24-pack of water sitting in your kitchen, or, god forbid, you were inconvenienced by evacuation. I'd rather that than the alternative.
