You don't have to tell me about Irene's damage. Upstate NY had unprecedented damage and so did Vermont (to add to the list mentioned). I was just pointing out that if the storm does not direct hit the cities with a punch, it is overhyped, and the national media will ignore the smaller, less populated areas hit the most.

"Over-hyping" is a term best saved for things of smaller magnitude than hurricanes. The best idea we have for tracks are nothing more than guesses; these storms have changed course drastically at the last minute. If a storm looks like it will be making landfall in an area, that area had better be prepared. If the storm veers north or south, then be thankful for it. The default reaction shouldn't be "Ugh, how annoying this all was for me."

Oh I KNOW Irene hit upstate, Connecticut and Northern NJ hard! Thing is, they hype the City in particular, causing Bloomie to pull all this BS. Sorry Bloomie, I have no where else to go!

Yeah, I was in an area of NJ that got hit hard from Irene. No power for a couple of days, which was fortunate. By the end of the week there were people in my area who still didn't have power.

I don't take these storms as lightly anymore because in 2010 we had a wind storm take down a ton of trees and a power pole on my property. We were without power for 2 days again. And last October we got the snow which knocked power out again for 2 days. Fortunately, I live at the top of a hill, so my house flooding isn't a huge concern. But, sinkholes and mud slides on my street are.

Irene could have hit NYC full-on as easily as it hit the places it did - the disaster preparations weren't unwarranted just because the storm happened to zig instead of zag.

They hype the city because a direct hit on modern Manhattan is unprecedented, and given the city's size, it could be catastrophic.

This is hardly frivolous BS. This is the only way to protect people. If Bloomberg did less, and the city gets slammed by a storm- the outrage would be immense.

I've been hearing from people who could care less about this storm since nothing happened with the last one and I just have to roll my eyes. I'm from Florida so I know that when a storm like this is even threatened to hit you, you make sure you have flashlights/batteries, a radio, masking tape for your windows, water, food for your pets, canned foods and candles. If it doesn't hit - GREAT. You'll have the supplies if you need them in the future. But these people I see on Facebook and elsewhere who stock up on booze and ice cream and plan hurricane parties just piss me off.

You can never be too careful or too prepared.

This has the potential, as others have said, to cause serious damage. I applaud the towns and cities, including NYC, that are sending out early warnings.

This is not a time to be foolish. Better to be prepared and have nothing happen.

It sounds like Jersey is the only state so far to not call a State of Emergency. Seriously, Christie. When are you and what will it take for you to?

I'm dreading going to to fill my car up with gas today. And pick up a few things from the store. It's one thing to be extra cautious. But, it's another thing to act like we're all going to die. People in my area get panicky about everything and get nasty on top of that.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Jordan, I'm a Louisiana native, so I totally share your frustration regarding those whose sole response is to stock up on tequila. However, I've always viewed the hurricane party as a kind of coping mechanism. With every NWS warning and state of emergency declared, the ball is completely in the air as to whether this will either blow over or be the next big one. It's an impossible situation--laughable, because it has to be--and for those of us accustomed to finding ourselves in that place multiple times a year, there's a necessary balance between preparing for three months of living on MREs and taking another shot.

Having said that, one more Facebook status yawningly comparing this to Irene and I'll cut a bitch.

NYC might get shut down on Monday depending on what the mayor & NJ governor with the transit systems. they plan to make a decision on Sunday.

I went out this afternoon. I think I missed all the crazy people from earlier in the day. Or they will be going out tomorrow to find they can't get stuff they were looking for. I know the gas station in my town is out of diesel fuel. I think Sears Hardware was out of propane too.

Walgreens decided to hype of the storm. On their sign outside the store they were advertising Frankenstorm to get people in there to shop.

Bloomberg just held a press conference- It doesn't sound like it will be too bad in NYC. It looks like Jersey, Delaware and Maryland will be hit much worse than us here. No decisions have been made yet concerning shutting down the MTA.

Thinking of everyone who will be impacted. If the storm does go the way it is projected right now, my dad said we might not get the worst of it. It sounds like it will go south and west of us. Still not a good situation though.

OK--you guys do realize that that is New Jersey right over there, across the river, right? I'm unclear how weather could devastate New Jersey without impacting NYC at the same time. Even if it's just the splatter bouncing off Hoboken and Jersey City...

All joking aside, be safe out there. I got to see the damage from Irene first hand when I was hiking in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine this summer. I'd been in Vermont before Irene and the devastation along the local streams and rivers was pretty incredible. If there ends up being flooding near you, don't try to make your way through even shallow looking standing water. You can never really tell how deep it is or if there is an electrical line that may have fallen into it, (or in the city been compromised underground)

So all these models show that were I live...Burlington NJ is going to get hit with the middle of the storm...we are a river town...although we won't be as bad as the shore, it does not look good for us in south/central NJ....I am just hoping that I won't be evacuated...I am stocked and ready to lose power for a couple of days (hoping that doesn't happen though)...I am just happy my grandparents have evacuated from Sea Isle City today...their house is right on the beach and the back yard is across the street from the bay...I know these storms get over hyped, but this one looks like the real deal...I pray they are wrong though
