What's on everyone's horror movie watch list this Halloween? I'm sure many of us might be stuck inside with this hurricane coming, so anyone having any marathons?

I'm going to my girlfriends Halloween party and I'm supplying the movies so I'm bringing "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Blair Witch Project".

Not horror, really, but I did watch Hocus Pocus on Blue Ray last night and I had forgotten all of the beautiful fall colors in it.

Can't believe it'll be 20 years old next year!

I used to watch that over and over as a child! It made my parents worry about me.... I haven't seen it in ages, sadly.

I watched the Spanish movie [rec] late last night at a friend's recommendation. I found it on Fear.net. It was perfectly creepy

I heard that was really good. Found footage movies always give me the creeps, even though I know they're fake.

Oooh, I love the [rec] movies. Part 2 is good also Namo. It expands on what we find out about in the last scene of part I.

And the 3rd entry is coming to dvd in a week or two.

I'm still deciding what I'm going to watch, but I know I'm at least going to watch Basket Case, which arrived on BD.

[rec]2 is also on fearnet. I will say the first one turned my greatest fantasy, being confined to an apartment house with a shaven-headed fireman, into a nightmare.

I watched the original Carrie and Friday the 13th in the beginning of the month. Both made me realize what is wrong with most horror movies today.

Here are a few recommendations:

If you don't mind gore The Loved Ones is a crazy and unpredictable blast (I mentioned it in the other Halloween thread).

If you don't like gore The Cabin In The Woods is a clever deconstruction of the genre with some real scares.

If you want to be surprised, Rabies (which oddly has nothing to do with the titular disease) is full of twists and turns that you won't see coming.

Given that you've seen Basket Case, taz, have you also seen Brain Damage? Same director and it has an irreverent, 'just say no' Reagan-era theme. I do like The Loved Ones too.

The Shining, The House at Haunted Hill, Diabolique, Carnival of Souls, Halloween, and The Bride of Frankenstein are my choices.

I also caught The Nightmare on Elm Street 5: Dream Child on TV recently, lord that dinner scene is GRO-TESQUE!

Oh yes I love Brain Damage strummer. And also the Re-animator movies.

Another fave is Clive Barker's Nightbreed. There is a complete cut of the film with something like an hour of cut footage (Barker claims the studio butchered it) traveling the country now. I hope it makes its way to BD soon.

The theatrical cut is available at Warner Archive is anyone is interested.

Halloween isn't Halloween without Hocus Pocus.

The creepiest movie I've seen this year is perhaps the Spanish movie Julia's Eyes, which is probably more of a thriller, but is high on atmosphere and really gave me chills as I watched alone.

The Innocents (Deborah Kerr) is a new favorite of mine too.

The Innocents is perfection. Really wonderful. I've always been curious about the original play--I know it was a hit in the 50s, and then Harold Pinter revived it in the 70s (with Sarah Jessica Parker as the little girl) and it was a big old flop. Truman Capote apparently helped re-write the script for the movie... Of course the original story is wonderful anyway, but...

Jack Clayton never seems to get the credit for making such an atmospheric movie (and still during the Hayes Code days)--yeah his Great Gatsby was a flop, but he has some really amazingly atmospheric films. The Pumpkin Eater is weird, but I think pretty great (and Harold Pinter did the screenplay, so I guess there's some connection somewhere), and while I know the final cut was taken away from him, I think Disney's creepy adaptation of Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes also has great atmosphere (he seems to hhave a thing for creepy stories involving children or childhood). Room at the Top is good too as is Our Mother's House, about religious kids who pretend their mother hadn't died and secretly bury her and seems to have influenced Ian McEwan's The Cement Garden and its film (minus the incest :P ). .

I liked VHS for the most part but I get some of the pans it received from critics. Definitely need to like found footage stuff. Segments 1 and 4 are my favorite.

I liked The Collector. It was more graphic than I expected (not a bad thing) and way more suspenseful than anticipated.

The sequel, The Collection, is coming out in November.

Why they didn't go for a Halloween release is beyond me, but from I've seen it's going to be really insane.

I watched Insidious for the first time last night, and it actually freaked the crap out of me, something that hasn't happened in a long time. I thought I would watching something light and fun after, but decided on the original Dracula since I've never seen it. Not that scary by today's standards, but a classic! I love Netflix.
