I was actually surprised by how good The Collector was. I probably passed by that cover a few dozen times and just assumed it was one of those direct-to-video crappy horrors (which are also fun at times, but in a very different way). Instead, I found myself really rooting for the main character and shocked by just how effective and gruesome some of the scenes were (the cat, amongst others). The Collector has been compared to Saw a lot, and while I note the similarities, I found it a hell of a lot better than a majority of those films.

Session 9 just got under my skin. From the first frame, it kind of sets the tone for some nontraditional spooks. Though I was confused at some parts, it all comes to a head at the end. Easily one of my (many) favorite new horror films.

Jordan, thanks for posting that audio. I love how much these types of movies worked back in the day. Whenever I watch a horror classic for the first time, I try to get in that mindset. It's difficult, when any horror fan has seen a large amount of these films, to get shocked and not be desensitized. Hearing these reactions (or how some people wouldn't swim after seeing Jaws) kind of makes me jealous.

Black Christmas! My all-time favorite horror film. Genuinely frightening, atmospheric, and inspired countless other films, including the original Halloween. Steer clear of that embarrassing remake though.

Well, I still recommend the creepy 1965 The Collector

Black Christmas tops my list--at least of slasher films--too. Plus it's Canadian (of course a lot of those 70s/80s slashers were filmed here, but had less actual Canadian actors/crew). It's truly brilliant, has (for me) just the right amount of gore--plus I feel good watching it when I'm feeling grumpy at Christmas time. (And seriously what a cast--Olivia, Keir, Andrea, Margot...)

I think, despitesome truly dark subject matter and that creepy ending, it also has the right balance for me of not seeming misogynistic--as so many later slashers did--and having characters you actually find interesting and some you care about.

I am sure any fan knows the story, how John Carpenter was loosely involved in it, and probably heard that at one point Bob Clark (who went on to do the Canadian "classic" Porky's as well as A Christmas Story) was contemplating a sequel set at Halloween... Not to take away from Halloween's brilliance, though.

I know it had a bit of a bothced release--different titles in different places, no major distribution, but I'm glad it's become the cult classic it has (I obviously ignored the remake though I heard it involved eating eyeballs...)

I thought one of the DVDs gave more details--I believe it only opened as Black Christmas in a few US cities. Then a year later they tried it again, under this name... There used to be a site with a huge history of the film, that I, of course, can't find.

Can't stay away from the Friday the 13ths on AMC, watched IT last night on TV (Such a disappointment!) and actually went to the theater to see Paranormal Activity 4!
