With one of my 2 sisters dying earlier this year, I am reminded about how my mother used to cook up everything from scratch & would not sit down until everyone was served.
It does bring back memories & saddens me that many of those around that table are no longer here & I think of them always.
Happy Thanksgiving to one & all.

We usually have our extended family over- around 18 people. At least that's what we've done for the last 20+ years. This year it will be myself, mom, and dad. We will be having STEAK and sliced potatoes. Yes, steak
My dad has turey nearly everyday at work and I am not in love with turkey so steak sounds good for all of us. We don't have it that often so it will be a nice treat. We aren't having the whole family over because I've been having fainting/seizure spells and although I'm getting better, I really don't want to take a chance of having a seizure in front of the family.

I actually like the leftovers better. We usually start picking on the leftovers a few hours after we ate the regular meal! We pack everything up, put it in the fridge, and then take it all out again later on!

Now I'm getting annoyed. My parents seem so set on going out for Chinese food. It's Thanksgiving. We can have that any time of the year. At least if nobody is cooking dinner for us that day, we should at least go to a halfway decent place.

Reggie, I have to chime in that I'd also love to join you for Thanksgiving one year. I would even buy a top hat for the occasion.

My favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner comes the day after since I'm the cook. I put turkey, potatoes, sauerkraut, noodles, dressing and gravy in a big bowl right before dinner clean up and store it away in the frige. Then I enjoy MY leftovers which I have aptly named Turkey Bowl! It's like a once a year casserole, and is delicious! Everything's so much better the next day!

marianne, if your parents are set in going to a Chinese restaurant, you can suggest PFChangs (not sure if there is one near you). It's an upscale Chinese restaurant...nothing like the average hometown Chinese restaurant. Excellent food, great service, nice atmosphere, average prices. It's Chinese cuisine but definitely made much healthier and better than in a regular Chinese restaurant.
And if you go there, you have to get the lettuce wraps. That's a must.

um, I would not suggest a chain restaurant over one of the best restaurants in Chinatown. Sorry. and I enjoy PF Chang's.

It's just me again this year. I honestly don't mind since it's the one time of the year I actually get to be alone in the house. I bought a turkey breast (don't tell PETA) and things to make southern cornbread dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberries and a pumpkin pie with a ginger snap crust. The Swede and I hook up our web cams and have our trans-Atlantic dinner together. I am so glad this will be the last one.

JG2, what else goes in your stuffing?
I do cornbread, sausage, apple, pecans, onions, and raisins.
It's hands-down my favorite part of the meal.

I just make it the way my mom always has with cornbread (NOT sweet), a little dried white bread (I may use some saltines this year as Paula Deen says it makes the dressing), lots of celery, sage, poultry seasoning, stock (trying vegetable this year though my mom always uses chicken), eggs, a little butter, salt and pepper. It's not crumbly like stuffing. We make it very wet, pour it into a pan and bake it. It ends up almost like the consistency of bread pudding. It's hard to describe, but it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without it.

Yes, I do it in a pan also; same consistency.

I love moist stuffing. This year my Thanksgiving table has to be guten-free AND dairy-free. I'm actually having fun giving my old stant-bys makeovers. At least so far.....could be a different story come Thursday.

We use pumpkin muffins in our stuffing.

I was watching Paula Deen yesterday while I was working from home, and she made (s)mashed potatoes with rutabagas and parsnips. I've never had a rutabaga before, but this looked so delicious that I'm dying to try the recipe out. Since she's Paula Deen, she also put in a huge chunk of cream cheese and some butter (and probably heavy cream), but it looked incredible.

I love rutabaga. I didn't think I would, but I gave it a try. I'm not exactly sure how to describe the taste. I guess maybe it sort of it like a potato and squash mixed together. But, it really is good.
