Splash Is Closing. :-(

I think it was the mood of whomever was working the door that night as I had seen women there in the past. But some of the newer Yelp comments mentioned the same thing.

That being said, I do remember when they first opened. Uncle Charlie's was still quite popular. All I heard about was this new bar/club that featured dancers in a shower. Uncle Charlie's didn't last too much longer after Splash caught on. I don't ever remember an announcement being made, it just kind of closed (but then again, I stopped going once I started going to Splash). I kind of preferred Champs, but that place didn't last long at all.

I only ever went to Splash on Mondays for Musical Mondays. Perhaps I'm part of the problem.

The idea of XL getting Musical Mondays makes me want to punch a toddler. That place is a gharish 90's nightmare. And the security and bathroom attendants make me just feel like I'm in a hideous straight club.

Maybe they'll move Musical Mondays to the Eagle.

Could you IMAGINE???

I have a friend who manages a new club in midtown and they are claiming to 'go after' Musical Mondays. I can imagine NY without Splash. But NOT without Musical Mondays.

I'll be one pissed off homosexual if someone doesn't acquire Musical Mondays from SPLASH.

OK, for the uninitiated, can someone please explain Musical Mondays?

I remember CHAMPS very well Dottie. I dated one of the bouncers from that club, and I also dated a bartender from KING (remember that one?) and a stripper from STELLA'S.

Damn I'm a hoe! LoL!

MUSICAL MONDAYS is a theme night over at SPLASH where they play videos of Tony Award performances and famous musical numbers from films on multiple screens. People talk, get sloshed and audience participate.

When they play "Defying Gravity" from the Tony Awards performance the bartenders start passing out napkins and at the very end of the song when Idina screeches the last note everyone tosses their napkins up in the air at the same time. It's quite the show...and so much fun.

It's such a fun crowd to be around and it gets PACKED!!!

We should plan a BWW get together at MUSICAL MONDAYS before they close. That would be fun.

How is Musical Mondays now that John Bantay has left?

Carlos I remember Champs and Stella's, but not King. Where was that?

It's okay since John Bantay left. I actually went on his last night. Tony Built took over and he plays some cool stuff and he kept the tradition going with the Defying Gravity clip.

KING was on 6th Ave between 16th and 17th Streets across the street from NY Foundling.

Ah yes, now I remember! I only went there once.

Uncle Charlie's is the first gay bar I ever went to in NYC.

OK...that's not true. The Hanger was...but we were terrified and left and went immediately to Uncle Charlie's, so I lie and say UC was my first. I still mourn the loss.

I've had more fun at Musical Mondays than most other places. I suppose I can suck it up and go to XL if it lands there.

Uncle Charlie's was my first gay bar, too. It took 2 years of living in NYC before I got the nerve up to walk in. For some reason I was so afraid, especially since the windows were dark! I didn't know what to expect.

I remember Uncle Charlie's as well. I loved hanging out there. I was so sad to see it close.

The first gay bar I ever went to was called The Yellow Brick Road. It 1972 and I was 16 and it was pretty scary.

Then I found Julius. Then I found the International Stud. Then they started opening the four Uncle Charlies.

The Yellow Brick Road later became Eighty-Eights.

There were four Uncle Charlie's?

Am I correct in remembering that Uncle Charlie's closed without much fanfare? I loved going there on Saturday nights to watch Golden Girls. That was a hoot.

'The Yellow Brick Road later became Eighty-Eights.'

PLEASE don't bring up Eighty-Eights. My heart can't take it. My first few years in NYC were dominated by Eighty-Eights.

I was a waiter at UC on the weekends in the late 80s one summer.

RobbieJ, to think we might have crossed paths at Eighty-Eights. I used to be there every Friday night without fail (until I realized the owner played the same songs, in the same order, at the same time, week after week!).

To make extra $$$ back in the day I was a bar back/booze runner and I used to patrol the upstairs @ KING. I had to go around upstairs with a thin flashlight and shine it on anyone who was doing a little more than groping and making out upstairs. THE THINGS I SAW..AND STOPPED!

We had to do bathroom sweeps at Uncle Charlie's. It was always hopping!

I used to get up at Eighty-Eights and do the entirety of Getting Married Today. In each register. I'm surprised I never gay-bashed myself.
