Looks like Streep and Oprah may go head to head. Lead Actress just got a lot more interesting with Adams vs. Julia vs. Blanchett.
Assuming the Academy voters go along with the studio's "suggestion," because that's all it really is.
She has agreed to be promoted in the supporting category. If voters feel differently like they have done a few times in the past, it could backfire. Sometimes, the actor has ended up with nothing, other times (like Susan Sarandon in Atlantic City) they nominated her for a leading award, despite the "supporting" campaign.
I was about to post this. I'll believe it when I see it but how crazy of an Oscar race could it be with Meryl and Oprah in the same category? Roberts in lead (and also there is no way Amy Adams is going to want to submit in supporting if this were true) would make this race CRAZY.
But as Best said, sometimes the awards reject the categorizations by the movie campaigns. Winslet submitting The Reader for supporting until multiple awards shows went, 'Nuh-uh, you're LEAD'.
Keep in mind August: Osage County is Harvey's movie. He is backing Kidman and Dench this year in addition to Roberts and Streep (and even more in the supporting category for multiple movies). I think he has to realize he has too much on his plate this year. He was never going to submit both Roberts and Streep in lead but the conventional wisdom had Roberts there.
You should go ahead and post it, strummergirl. That way we can let broadway guy's (Sorry, ChiChi) (Sorry, itsafinelife) (Sorry, N2N Nate)'s thread drop to the bottom.
LOL Jordan, I actually found this out moments ago on one of the Oscar prediction boards I frequent (if that read as depressing as it did, I regret nothing). I usually look to get good read ups on board members who have gone to major festivals and report on the good stuff (I'm going to TIFF this year so I needed the 411 on going to a major festival) but of late I am looking at the Oscar season. Apparently this has been the rumor for months and has been kept very hush-hush. People still don't believe it because a.) She is Meryl Streep and b.) it is such a showy co-lead part that it seems a lot of awards voters will reject her in supporting category.
Are we so sure Oprah will gain traction for The Butler?
I've heard only "tepid" buzz for Oprah. Some say she's good, but I've heard no raves (so far).
I haven't seen it, so this is not my opinion ... just buzz from several of my friends who have seen the movie.
Yea, Oprah's probably not getting a nomination. In fact Lee Daniels' The Butler isn't shaping up to be much of a contender at all.
Oprah has been getting very mixed reviews so who knows.
Yeah, but it is a nice thought and compared to the other three acting categories, supporting actress seems most up in the air because aside from the August: Osage County have possibly 2 nods in the category, it is very up in the air.
The Butler still sounds like a mess even in the positive reviews (though it is nice that Yaya DaCosta is getting long overdue notice- she was great in John Sayles' Honeydripper) but it seems like a movie only SAG will award.

Broadway guy loved him some Gold Derby
That is BULLSH*T. I know the movie is going to be far more focused on Bill and Barbara, but I can't imagine any non-destructive way to make Violet a feasible supporting role.
Some of my VERY EARLY picks for Supporting Actress contenders.
And it is, as strummer says, wide open.
Amy Adams is going to have a couple of choice roles this fall. I hear she's awards caliber in Spike Jones' "Her" and then she's got "American Hustle".
Everything about Captain Phillips is Oscar bait, so Katherine Keener could be a contender.
Then there's Margo Martindale and Juliet Lewis along with Meryl for Osage.
And Naomie Harris for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom
I believe Amy is going to be campaigned for leading. I am also hoping Jennifer Garner gets into the supporting category for her role in Dallas Buyer's Club.
When does college start, again?
I start in a week.

Yup pretty much this. Although as much as I am anticipating Spike Jonze's Her (that trailer, MY GOD!!!!), I don't think it is too Oscar-y although I'd love nothing else than for Joaquin Phoenix to suffer through another nomination.
I forgot another 'Harvey Girl' this season which is Octavia Spencer in Fruitvale Station. Let's remember how last year's wide-open Supporting Actor race was always complicated by the fact everybody nominated was a previous winner. I think voters would be comfortable giving Spencer another nod, especially a role much different than her previous win.
Nobody knows how big Jennifer Lawrence's role is in American Hustle though look at Jacki Weaver last year in getting a nod for so little screen-time.
Cate Blanchett might be a double-nominee contender in The Monuments Men (though I am really ambivalent about the movie actually being good).
Some people think Cameron Diaz from Ridley Scott's The Counselor might surprise.
Sally Hawkins might get in for Blue Jasmine. Sony Pictures Classic always has a good track record on campaigning.
And since there have been 2 consecutive Palme d'or winners in the Best Picture category and nominated in other major categories, a lot of people are wondering if the two actresses in Blue is the Warmest Color might get nominated in the acting categories, especially when the film unfortunately was not eligible to even be selected as France's choice for Best Foreign Language film due to missing a cut-off date. Don't be surprised is all I am saying. It may be a 3 hr. coming of age movie based on a graphic novel but it got even more universal praise than Tree of Life or Amour at Cannes. Lea Seydoux would be in supporting and she is helped by the fact she got exposure to Academy audiences before. It's a very slim chance of it happening but if Malick and Haneke can break through with the Academy anything seems possible.
My Oscar Predictions for Best Actress and Supporting:
Leading:
Amy Adams, American Hustle.
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine.
Judi Dench, Philomena.
Julia Roberts, August: Osage County.
Nicole Kidman, Grace of Monaco.
Supporting:
Jennifer Garner, Dallas Buyers Club.
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle.
Octavia Spencer, Fruitvale Station.
Meryl Streep, August: Osage County.
Oprah Winfrey, Lee Daniels' The Butler.
Good call on the "Blue Is the Warmest Color" girls.
Given the explicit nature of the film it still may be an uphill battle though.
Amy Adams is by all accounts a supporting role in American Hustle.
A week away?
I may have to start a countdown thread!
I think THE BUTLER is going to wind up being less than Oprah hoped for. I could eat my words, but I've heard it's bloated beyond belief, and that she's perfectly okay in the film, but not as good as she likely thinks she is. I still plan on seeing it to judge for myself.
We might have to change our joke title to OPRAH WANTS A GOLDEN GLOBE, since that's about the best she'll probably get at this point-- mostly because the HFPA is a money/celebrity-hungry joke.
"I may have to start a countdown thread"
Oh I'll still be around here.
