Alito's right about free speech not being a license to spew hate, but as soon as you start blocking some people from speaking you're going down a slippery slope.
I know you.
I know you.

the first amendment does have to allow the right to spew hate, as if that is deprived, we are deprived of the power to RESIST said hate.
as has been elucidated here on numerous occasions, the correct strategy for dealing with phelps is to ignore him. remember he was a very active civil rights activist in the 70s. this means he is either extremely crazy or extremely crafty. if i had to guess, i would say it is some combination of the above, and he knows exactly what he's doing.

Crazy AND crafty- like those people who make dioramas of "Great Moments in History" with dead squirrels dressed up as all the participants.

The ruling is kind of what I expected - the only surprise was Alito. I thought it would be 9-0,

I'm not surprised either. As vile as they are the WBC has always been within their rights & follows the laws. To say they can't say something would just open a whole new can of worms.

Maybe we can't shut you up but we can shut you OUT.

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".

Of course, this also means that gays and soldiers etc. can all have very loud and ugly protests at the funerals of Westboro members. Fred Phelps' funeral is going to be one hell of a fun time.

If I don't take a dump on his coffin, it won't be for lack of trying.

When he dies (and I hope its a slow painful death for him...I'm not trying to be an ass..well actually I am) but when he does...I want those freaks to be torn to shreds...I dont care what it takes, I want them to be kicked around, abused, anything that makes them feel even 1/1000000th of the pain they cause others.

There's going to be more homos at Phelps funeral than at Disney's gay days.

It would be fun to see when the Westboro folks die, go to hell and see who God really hates.......
But I certainly won't be in the vicinity to witness it ( I could go on Skype).

I don't think they would have a funeral for Phelps. They HAVE to know it would be protested.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Fine. Then we'll have a memorial service at my place.
And Shirley is definitely invited.

Actually it does happen, uncage. I know I've shared the story about the time they came to my town before.
Long story short they had a 3 day agenda (protesting in front of schools, synagogues, etc.) and they left after 1 day.
Absolutely no media attention from the local papers or newscasts. So they left.
And I can not wait to celebrate when this man drops dead.

Sometime they will go to far at a military funeral & the parents will go ballistic & someone is going to get seriously hurt - hopefully one or more of them.

Ruining more lives and garnering the Phelpses even more attention.

I actually laughed out loud when I read your first post, Reg. Bravo.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

Yes, but then this board would be so wholesome and where's the fun in that?
