I know EXACTLY what you mean! After seeing this for the first time MANY years ago, I started adding gingerbread cookies to the list of Christmas cookies I'd bake. I've been doing them every year since then. There's one for each one in the family - each personalized with their names. This year I got to watch the new babies 'teething' on theirs!
(God - listen to that voice!)
Mamie, Sinatra and Garland were the greatest singers of the 20th century. I can't remember who said, "The 20th century ended when Frank Sinatra died," but I agree.
Already in progress:

I just posted a thread about a film on TCM, the same minute you posted this, Henny Penny.
Play Twilight Zone music.
J'adore Gigi!
I simply love it!
J'adore Leslie Caron!
Hmmm. Je ne sais pas, Addy. La Cuvette Super ou L'Americaine a Paris????
LOL...
Les deux !
(Tivo!)
...biere ou champagne?!
Ah, je prefere de beaucoup L'Americaine a Paris!
(me, too!) *sigh*
L'Americaine a Paris avec le champagne, mais oui!
Jane, tu choisis bien!
Merci beaucoup, mon cherie!
Il n'ya pas de quoi, Jane!
n'importe quel moment, Penny!
I love 'em both! Thankfully, we have them both to love.
I know so many people that don't "get" Gigi. It makes me sad. I think it's a masterpiece. But so many people approach it with a modern sensibility and don't understand the "romantic politics" of the time.
Besty, you love La Cuvette Super????
(pssst: Besty - Miss P was asking if I would watch The Superbowl or American in Paris...)
I adore both of those movies, also.
Gigi has some of the most wonderful songs. I remember being a little girl and singing every word to 'The Night They Invented Champagne". I especially loved making the cork-popping 'sound' with my finger inside my mouth! (not sure how to describe that...)
Every song from that movie is a classic!
And, I agree with you about the lack of understanding of the 'romantic politics' of the time. It's a fascinating topic.
No-no-no, I wasn't even commenting about Le Super Bowl.
I was, as Addy suspected, referring to the two Parisian Best Picture musicals on TCM.
I've talked to many people who creep out over "Gigi" saying thinks like:
But she's training to be a 'ho!
And she's under age, and that man who loves her was a man when she was a little girl.
And that "little girl" song is a valentine to pedophilia.
And on and on...
They don't understand the era. They think women actually had freedom, a "voice" and options back then. They don't understand the class system and how it took hold of society.
Oh, listen to me, telling Addy and Penny things they already know.
I also knew that you were talking about An American in Paris and Gigi, Besty! I was just being a smart ass!
They don't understand the era. They think women actually had freedom, a "voice" and options back then. They don't understand the class system and how it took hold of society.
Exactly!
And, do those people also realize that Gigi is based on a book by Colette and that her main themes were the joys and pains of love, and female sexuality in the male-dominated world?
