Oh how about the new subway signs...something like
"if you see a unattended packages or luggage please report it"
or running might be a better suggestion.

Posted: 8/1/04 at 8:04pmthey won't stop screaming that it's political. when bubba sent cruise missiles after camps and into sudan, people were claiming that it was political: to take attention away from monica. it was abominable then and it's abominable now, but this is the country that we live in and unscrupulous members of the party that is out of power will use just about anything against the party that is in power.

Unfortunately.
But I think that the attack happening will shut up a few people. Not that I want it to happen.

Posted: 8/1/04 at 8:25pmoh no, zola, there's plenty of folks (hi mom) who'll argue to the death that those cruise missiles were launched to distract the country. personally i found that view to be disgusting then and now (i was upset about other parts of the attacks, but that's another story), but it's out there. just as there are partisans on the other side who will argue to the death that gw knew about the specifics of 9/11 ahead of time and used that knowledge to help dick cheney and others make a killing in the stock market. i think both views are ridiculous, but there are partisans on both sides who will use outrageous means to try to discredit their opponents.

Well, as one of the board's leading conspiracy theorists coming from the left, the fact that this is scaring me this time, is REALLY scaring me.
I will be more than happy to be proven wrong.

I'm sorry, but this is getting ridiculous.
It's getting to the point of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf". They keep raising and lowering and raising that stupid alert, and pretty soon NO ONE is going to pay attention. So next time they raise it to tangerine or whatever the hell it is, no one's going to listen. And then we'll be attacked. It's stupid.
And it's not like this system is any GOOD anyway. Okay, so it's gone from canary to grapefruit. Maybe next week it'll go from Off-white to ivory. What difference does it make to me? What am I supposed to DO about it? Saran-wrap myself inside my house? Right. The system doesn't do anything but SCARE people, and people who are scared tend to become irrational and stupid. What did they say? Something about Wall Street and truck bombs and chemical agents? So, tell me, am I suposed to cancel my trip to New York? George Bush says no, if I cancelled my trip I'd be giving the terrorists what they want. But Tom Ridge is telling me I'm going to die. Hmm...
So I guess...maybe I'll have to stay away from Wall Street and any trucks I see. Oh, and while I'm at it, I should probably not breathe, either. Or eat. Or drink the water. Wouldn't want to get smallpox or ebola.
Feel free to chew me out, all of you Dept. of Homeland Security Fans...Come on, I know you're out there...

I'm at work right now b/c I'm working overtime. There was an e-mail sent to everyone here re: terror alert:
As you may know, a terror alert was issued earlier today for specific locations in New York, Washington and Newark. The proximity of [our number address] to a named location in the alert is of concern to all of us. However, the Mayor and other civic officials have encouraged everyone to go about their business and said that security will be increased, particularly around specified locations. Expect transportation delays and added security checks .Be alert, patient with the inconveniences and aware of any suspicious activity. Unfortunately, I am not sure there is anything else we can do or say.
Damn, I thought it was going to be like something like "stay home!" but it would have to be something very big to get them to close the offices.

"Tangerine, ivory, canary, or grapefruit" I want to make a joke, but know better. (That and I can't think of how to word it.)
But seriously I hope nothing comes to pass, and if it is any consolation to anyone working in and around those areas, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Posted: 8/1/04 at 9:29pmI can't stop thinking about the train issue. It IS so easy for them to carry a bomb on there in a backpack. That worries me. I wonder if that's what could happen.

As a matter of fact, Papa, I DID read the thread. And your point...?
And iflitifloat, I'm not talking about the posters on the board. I'm talking about the government. I'm ALWAYS talking about the government.

epo, the warning was specific about the use of vehicular bombs and at specific targets. hence the announcements.
no point, rodent, just curious.
in the post 9/11 world, could you imagine what would happen if there were a catastrophic attack and it turned out that the government had kept information, any information, that they'd had about the possibility of such an attack to themselves? the hearings, the firings, the headlines, the accusations. instead, since they choose to publicize such threats in the hopes that such publicity might dissuade the nihilists who revel in their culture of death from carrying out their missions, we have just the headlines and the accusations of political grandstanding (even though prominent politicians from the democratic party have come out strongly supporting the dhs's assessment of the threat and their actions).

Of *course* there is a political aspect to these actions and announcements. Whether it's the Clinton White House or the Bush White House (and as a NYC-dwelling, gay, Jewish man, you can guess where my sympathies lie) the decision to raise/lower the threat level or send missiles is reviewed by people with very political POV's (chief of staff, head of re-election committee etc.). Doesn't mean that the actions have purely political motives, but don't tell me that you believe that GWB is going to "damn the politics, man, and do the right thing." please.

Don't even begin to compare Republicans to terrorists- doing that is an insult to people who actually know what terrorists do.
And as for terrorist alert levels- what a bad idea. I think alertness is a great idea. Seriously. You're talking to the girl who was taught to identify and report suspicious packages from the time she could walk. But giving the general public vague warnings about attacks isn't going to help anything- obviously, all it's led to is "boy who cried wolf" syndrome. Warning the staffs of the individual buildings affected and the governments of the cities affected would be nice. But then they might be accused of witholding information. So really, I don't know what the solution is there, except to encourage a higher level of alertness all the time.
And oh, yeah- to strike the terrorists where they actually live. Not in a country that hadn't committed a terrorist act against the U.S. since 1993.
Oh, and I'll go to New York if I friggin' feel like it. Getting anywhere near my native country is probably 10 times more dangerous than a trip to Manhattan. So I'll deal.
