The Devil's Backbone, Julia's Eyes and The Orphanage are all great. Now that I've stated thinking about it, I think I'll be watching those three this October.

The other horror classic I want to like but can't really connect with is Phantasm. The Tall Man, "Boyyyyyy," the murder pinballs, the dwarf demons- it should do something for me on some level, but I'm not feeling it.
On the other hand, you know what "horror" "classic" I love, but always watch near Christmas for reasons that only make sense to me? Phantom of the Paradise.

I cant believe I've never seen "Trick r Treat"! It's a must this year with all of these recommendations!
What I do is search "horror" on my dvr and go through the list and record every favorite and never seen that I can. It fills that sucker up in no time, so I'm forced to watch them, especially since the hubby will only watch those I insist he not miss.
My faves, which I try to see every year:
The Exorcist (duh!)
The Exorcist 2 and 3, 2 for the laughs, and 3 because it's great
Elm Streets 1 and 3
Childs Play 3 ( I love the end in the factory so much!)
The Fog
The Thing (1982)
Halloween (only the original)
Friday the 13th 1-3 ( I love the Amy Steel and Tom McBride in 2)
Psycho
Rosemary's Baby
The Omen
Carnival of Souls
Dracula, any or all of them
sooooo many others!

Black Christmas. The original, even though the sh*tty remake is good for a laugh.
Same for Halloween.
Friday the 13th, Part 2. Amy Steel is fantastic, and that ambiguous ending? Best in the series.

On Halloween I usually just pick something appropriate off of Netflix, but it invariably backfires on me because I pick the wrong movie. Last year it was House on Haunted Hill and Alyce Kills, neither of which were very good, and the year before it was The Frighteners, which I hadn't seen since it came out and which I remembered liking, but which I thought was terrible this time.
One year when I was a kid I had a marathon of old '30s and '40s Universal horror movies and had a great time. Maybe I'll do that again this year. I think more than any other films, they have the perfect Halloween atmosphere (and plus most of them are only about 70 minutes long, so it's easy to watch a bunch of them).

I usually watch THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN at some point Halloween-wise, it's just such good fun. I'm thinking I'm due for another look at THE SHINING again, maybe NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and/or the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.
And there's always good old ISLAND OF LOST SOULS -- still transgressive after all these years.

I too do not understand the appeal of "Hocus Pocus", give me the far superior "The Witches".
I always watch Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. While not a great film, the look and feel is the ultimate halloweeny atmosphere. I also watch Bram Strokers Dracula. A throwback hollywood studio gothic romance with Gary Oldmans fantastic performance front and center. I have also added Paranorman and Coraline, two of the best animated films in the past 10 years, both eerie and creepie for the family.

It seems that Burton has proven in the past years that if he has some failing as a creative auteur, he is a master of pastiche, and his two Hammer tributes- Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd- are pitch perfect, even if his treatment of the musical is divisive.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 1, 3 and 7 are perfect classics. Trick or Treat is a lot of fun. Rosemary's Baby, Psycho 1 and the underrated 2. The Stepford Wives, Carrie, Halloween and H20, Friday 13th, Scream 1,2 and 4, The Conjuring,......Showgirls ![]()
To whoever mentioned Hellbent (I think it was my darling Namo) that is one of the worst films I've seen, and a friend of mine is one of the leads.

That's a Valentine's Day movie, not a Halloween movie.

That's a legendary alternative band, not a Valentine's Day movie.

Just saw this at the Bell Lightbox in TO. Not quite the usual cuppa blood- which is why I liked it.

My favorite Halloween movies are, as many of you, HOCUS POCUS, TRICK 'R TREAT, and THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS - I watch it in December too.
A new movie that's not really about Halloween but entirely spooked me is IT FOLLOWS. I watched it three times this past week (twice alone and once with friends) and now I can't walk around anywhere without thinking someone is coming for me. (Then again - I've been pretty nun-like for a while, so I think I'm safe.)

Let me add The Others. This is perhaps the only movie I can stand Nicole Kidman in.

Favorite must-watch movies, on or around Halloween:
The Shining
Carrie
The Exorcist
Exorcist II: Don't Judge
The Omen
The Sentinel
Bride of Frankenstein
Young Frankenstein
Mad Monster Party
Munster, Go Home
I need my silly Halloween movies as much as my scary ones.
Also have to watch the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Not a movie, but it's a must-watch every season.

Nightmare on Elm Street 2 - The gayest horror film ever. Freddy trying to "enter" Jesse, something in the closet! Jesse and his jock bff, meeting his gym teacher in a leather bar and going back to the changing rooms with him, running to his jock bff after Jesse can't go thru with sex with his "girlfriend" who is Meryl Streep's twin! I LOVE IT.
Or Horror Hotel, a witch burnt at the stake, coming back hundreds of years later to seek revenge on the decendants of the village. B&W and lots of fog! FABULOUS!
